St George Illawarra halfback Brett Firman has been ruled out of this Friday’s clash with the Broncos in Brisbane following confirmation that he will have a shoulder reconstruction.

Firman aggravated his right shoulder in yesterday’s 42-8 loss to the Knights and will go under the knife tommorrow.

It is the second reconstruction in two years for Firman who was forced to sit out most of 2002 with Sharks following an operation on his left shoulder.

Firman, 21 is expected to be out for up to six months but should be fit for the start of the 2004 season.

In other news, Dragons forward Henry Perenara will also have shoulder surgery tomorrow and should be able to start training in six weeks time.

Dragons coach Nathan Brown is hopeful centre Mark Gasnier may be able to play but Lance Thompson will definitely be out.

It'll be good to have Firman back in time for the start of next season - He was going to have shoulder surgery of some description in the off-season regardless of whether he agravated it yesterday, wasn't he??

I've said it before & I'll say it again. The club seriously needs to conduct a self-audit on its training & medical procedures as the toll we've suffered in the last 3 seasons or so defies bad luck. I think the club should also cop the tip & send the Premier League boys to the World Sevens next season - don't need another Face fiasco...

Cheers,
Ben S.
