Just watching today’s match, why do Ireland which is a an actual country, not use their national flag, and they also used a “team” anthem not a national anthem.

Wales and Scotland are technically not countries, but part of UK, but still use their old flags and anthems...

It's complicated, but in Rugby League (and I think Union too) they compete as a combined Ireland side. Republic and Northern Ireland together. So apparently they need to used a different flag.

Ahhh

Should not just use the St Patrick’s cross? (Red x on white)

Side issue .....think someone should have tipped off the young lass singing the Irish anthem ! Wearing a red dress ...the colour of their opposition ...maybe not the best choice ! :)

The St Patrick's flag was artificially constructed so that Ireland could be represented in the Butcher's Apron. It is offensive to the Nationalist community. The tricolour is offensive to the Unionists despite having an orange strip. It's display was illegal in the northern state until relatively recently. The red hand flag which the northern state used was banned by the Good Friday agreements. Which leaves the four provinces flag.
The republic's anthem Amhran na Bhfinn (A Soldier's Song) is deliberately offensive to unionists as is God save the Queen to the Nationalists. Londonderry Air or Danny Boy used to be used by the Northern State but doesn't really cut it. So we are left with the hideous Ireland's Call

Masses of large st George flags with club affiliations on them around the ground in Perth. Special mention to hull KR fans who seemed to have come over on mass! There was 5 or 6 big hull KR flags in the ground.

Rugby Union cheats a bit, when they play in the South they play Amhran na Bhfiann followed by Ireland's call. They also fly the tricolour and the Ulster provincial flag without any representation of the Northern state

Here's the video of England v Ireland in 2007. Lansdowne road was being rebuilt so it was played in the Gaelic Games stadium, Croke Park. As some wits (F'wits?) said this was the first time the English had been to Croke Park since 1920 when British Forces fired into the crowd and killed 1 player and 15 spectators on Bloody Sunday

Without wanting to start too much of a fight, I am reminded by that clip the players are often presented to the President of Ireland, in this case Mary McAleese, before RU tests in Dublin
It would be great to have an independent head of state to come to these games.
As it is, I suspect the Queen's response to the world cup will be similar to her response when England finally won the cricket Ashes in 2009:
Australia wins - The Queen "wtf is Rugby League?"
England wins - The Queen "Knighthoods for everyone"

I was wondering about that...

Clever idea, its a good starting place for a united Ireland if Brexit goes bad.
