Well, we had Matt Johns coming in. Rogers probably would have been happy just to play centre anyway.

According to Ando, in something I'd read, he told Rat he was the best winger in the game so why should he move him. You don't weaken a strength to strengthen a weakness.

JL tried Rat at 5/8th a few times and I thought the results were pretty mediocre.

Players shouldn't be able to dictate to the coach where they want to play.

Having said that, JL also promised Rat he'd have first shot at centre when ET retired.
Maybe it's HIM we should be pointing the finger at.

Rogers was complaining to the media about this long before ET left. With every contract renewal there was always a promise of a move further in field. I think it is very much the club's fault that they promised something and later reneged on it, several times.

You shouldn't make promises that you can't be sure that you'll keep. I agree that players making demands isn't necessarily a good thing, but if it is at the time of contract renewal, either party can always turn it down and walk away. Perhaps this is what Rogers eventually did.

Yeah Opes said in Matty's book that he had every intention of making Mat play on the Wing, because he belived he was a world-class winger.

As for Langy promising Rat ET's Centre spot, well if he hadn't needed that surgery on his shoulder, I've no doubt that Rat would have played Centre for us in 2001.

As for us having Matty Johns coming in to play 5/8, that only happened well after Mat had announced his move to Union as I recall.

That's true, the timing in 2001 was all wrong. When Dykes left the focus was put on looking for a 5/8. Little did we know that Kimmorley would become available at the end of the year, otherwise we could have had a Noddy/Presto combination for 2002...

Having a world-class winger doesn't necessarily mean however that he couldn't have been a world-class five-eighth. He possesed as much potential to make the switch as Darren Lockyer did before his move into the halves.

Jimbo's right though, our timing was horrible that year.

I hardly think you can compare Rogers and Lockyer's potential as five eighths...one was always playing a wingers role while the other, as a fullback was playing the 5/8 role and displayed an incredible ability to 'set up' play. Matty rarely displayed the ability to set up play....and not saying that he hasn't got that abiltity...just wasnt allowed the chance to show it from the wing.......my point is..lockyer and rogers are worlds apart in what they've been able to display.
