‘What if I don’t come back?’ Tom Flegler provides raw update on devastating nerve injury image
Dolphins forward Tom Flegler has spoken at length on the rare and complex nerve injury that has crippled his rugby league career.
Interviewed on Fox Sport’s Face-to-Face, 25-year-old Flegler relived the moment that stopped his 100-game NRL career in its tracks in Round 5 of 2024—while reaffirming his determination to return the field.

“I made a tackle and had a sublux (partial dislocation) in my shoulder, I stretched the nerve and unfortunately it never came back,” Flegler explained.
“I waited six months hoping it would get better naturally without surgery, but that didn’t happen so I went in and got a nerve transplant from my rear tricep.”

“The surgery has worked, it is starting to heal, but there are a few more hurdles to overcome before we can put a timeframe on when I’m going to play again,” he continued.
‘It’s hard going to training’
While Flegler is back to normal training with the Dolphins in the gym and on-field running drills, he’s yet to start contact work.
“It’s not to say that I can’t do contact, we just want to give my shoulder the biggest chance to recover,” he said.
“It’s hard going to training knowing you’re not going to play at the end of the week.
“You just have to stay focused and try to see the light at the end of the tunnel.”
This time last year that light seemed a long way away for the former Tully Tigers junior.
“Going back pre surgery it was a thought that I’d had (that I may not play again),” Flegler admitted.
“When you have an injury like this reality sets in a bit, you have to think about things you don’t want to think about.
“What if I don’t come back? There’s always a chance.
“But with how I’m training and how things are coming along, I can’t see myself not playing footy again.”
