We don't need the best, 7's is a reason to watch fun RL.

Catch, pass, run and score, that's it.

I do agree however, get rid of club sides, and focus on national sides.

I raised this idea before that the Australian 7's side should be along the lines of the NBA all-star games, where the fans select the team.

The ARL could set up an internet site/1 900 number, where the fans vote the 10 players they want.

Gets rid of Coach bias, and probably won't field the best Oz side, but the most enjoyable.

It'd also be a great way to raise publicity.

The ARL could scam it so that Billy Slater is the highest voted player.

They could then go on sports tonight on channel 10 saying 'we got 500,000 votes from Victoria, he must be a household name down there'.... and cause all this false hype... ala from the RU rule book.

And, if not Oz, perhaps a NSW and Qld side instead.

What about if you give 2 points to the winner? A lot of clubs would take the competition a lot more seriously then.

How about instead of having Clubs - Each Aussie State has a team, an North and South Island Team, an English team then have all the international teams

That's a brilliant idea! One that would really get the fans directly involved in the comp. Sometimes I reckon alot of national teams should be selected that way, too, especially GB!!!!

This is a great idea. Teams could represent the City and Country from NSW, City and Country teams from QLD, Melbourne Storm and NASCA Aborigines representing Australia.

NZ could field Northern (ie Auckland/Northland & maybe Waikato) and Southern teams (the rest of NI and SI). A South Island RL team would be too weak. Aotearoa Maori would be strong too.

So that would be 9 teams.

Then add France, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Russia, PNG, Lebanon, England, Wales and two qualifiers, and that would make 20 teams.

The solution to the 7's problem is easy, and cost effective.

Allow the prize money to be used as a concession in the salary cap for that team, for the next year. If a team wins the 100K prize in 2005, they get an extra 100K under the cap in 2006. This provides clear incentive, and makes the comp much more important for the clubs.

Under such a system the prizemoney wouldn't need to be much - 50 K would be enough to motivate the teams. Ideally, the other 50 K could be offered as prizemoney to the international teams, or distributed to these teams to assist them with covering their costs and further development.

I'm sure eventually we will progress to countries. But we need NRL clubs at the moment to bring in the people. Sevens isn't totally re-entrenched in the RL calendar yet. The crowds this year were indicative of that.

you have to have the club sides, because they are the reason everyone goes to the sevens.

if next years sevens only consisted of international teams there would a lot of people who would not go.

i want to see the international game grow and all that, but i would find it bloody boring watching no names play all day for countries i dont reallt care about.
