the following statement from Jets chairman Barry Vining for the benefit of all members and fans.
A Statement from the Board of the Newtown Rugby League Football Club.
The Board of the Newtown RLFC has been working feverishly over recent years
to shore up the club's financial situation. Many people would say that it is
in the Board-Room and on the financial front that the real game of Rugby
League is played.
The major projects undertaken in recent times have been:
1. The Jets Sports Club continues to show good results, with May 2007 being
the most financially successful month in the club's history. The club itself
continues to be spruced up internally, the bistro is renowned for its great
value, quality cuisine and through good management the club's financial
position steadily improves.
2. Some years ago we bought the Parkes Leagues Club which was in financial
receivership. There have since been a number of well-received physical
restructures of the club as well as an internal staff reorganisation. At
present two former Newtown players in Paul Danes and Scott Fleming are
completing the new smoking areas as required by NSW Government legislation.
It is pleasing that central-western NSW has received much-needed rain which
will be a great boost to the regional economy and of course to the Parkes
Leagues Club. In the next 5 years Parkes will become a major transport hub
for road and rail freight interchange, further boosted by the
Melbourne-Brisbane inland rail freight proposal as supported by the
Australian Government. There are also several mining projects about to
commence in the region which will all pump tens of millions of dollars into
the Parkes town economy. Our investment in the Parkes Leagues Club looks
very bright indeed.
3. The large-scale redevelopment of the Camden Valley Golf Resort (the
former NSW Rugby League Country Club) is progressing positively and the club
expects to receive our first large financial return by the end of 2007. It
is increasingly apparent that the Newtown RLFC Board made a wise decision in
electing to retain Newtown's membership in this consortium.
4. The dressing-rooms at Henson Park were completely renovated at the
beginning of the 2005 season (at a cost of some $750,000), due in no small
part to the excellent working relation this club has developed with
Marrickville Council. Further to this, the club was successful in obtaining
a commitment from the popular State MP for Marrickville, Carmel Tebbutt, for
the Iemma Labor Government to make a $250,000 grant towards the resurfacing
of Henson Park. This grant will be paid to Marrickville Council and together
with further funding from the Council, there will be a complete resurfacing,
installation of new irrigation infrastructure plus a modern storm water
retention system with the intention of drought-proofing Henson Park. This
major program is to be undertaken at the completion of this football season.
5. The Newtown RLFC has a 5-year agreement with the Sydney Roosters RLFC,
plus an option for a further 5 years. We are currently in the second year of
the first phase of this Rugby League joint-venture agreement.
6. On top of all this, Newtown's results in recent years on the Rugby League
front have been more than creditable. The Board's ongoing aim is for the
Newtown Rugby League Football Club to participate in the highest level of
competition for which it is both financially and logistically possible for
Newtown to play in. In Newtown's case, that is the flagship competition of
the NSW Rugby League, currently the VB Premier League.
