For/against or head-to-head rule?

I see Fiji play Italy next. If Italy manage to win, they'll be on even points with Fiji. But, they will need to win by 46 points or more in order to have a better for-and-against than Fiji.

Does anyone know if it decided based on for-and-against or is the head-to-head rule in effect?

It should be head to head in short competitions like the world cup and for and against in long competitions like NRL.

The reason I don't like for and against in world cup is that it results in minnows getting bashed and humiliated when the system should encourage a degree of mercy from the established teams. Don't run up the score board with an eye to for and against.

It's for and against. In 2008 the six teams in Pools B & C all finished with a 1-1 record decided on for and against.

The chance that Italy can beat Fiji on Friday and still not go through shows it's time to end the cross-pool games. Even if we keep the super pools there needs to be 4 teams in each lower pool. If Italy had played Wales and Fiji played Ireland we might have a different story.

It's a shame either Ireland and Italy most likely deserve to be in the last 8. If fiji put Italy to the sword hard they might be the real deal.

16 teams at the next world cup will solve the cross-pool situation.
