Ex-Raider named as victim in murder case
Elizabeth Bellamy and Roderick Campbell
Tuesday, 8 August 2006

The man who died after a wild brawl outside a gay nightclub in Civic was a former young Raider with a promising sports career ahead of him.
Nato (David) Seuala, 23, of Ngunnawal, was named as the deceased in a court hearing yesterday at which the owner of the Cube nightclub was charged with his murder.
The Canberra Times has learned Seuala was a former member of the Canberra Raiders under-21 squad and had also worked as a personal trainer.
A short biography in a Canberra Institute of Technology guide spoke of the accounting student's ambitions.
"Life as an under 21s Canberra Raiders player, personal trainer and student can get quite hectic, but David loves the people contact," it read. "His career goal is to play rugby union for Samoa and become a professional sportsperson."

His fiancee, who did not want to be named, told The Canberra Times late last night the family was in the process of organising his funeral. She declined to comment further. Seuala died on Friday after he was allegedly stabbed during a brawl more than two weeks ago.

I knew something had happened in Canberra a few weeks ago, I was asked to fill in DJing at the Holy Grail the weekend after that happened. I didn't ask too many questions, though, there's too many things going on in the "night scene" industry to want to get too involved with.

I obviously have no knowledge of the background of this story, but why would a hetero-sexual man be at a gay nightclub to begin with?

I've been to a gay nightclub in Canberra. It was many moons ago and I was with a girl who eventually went home with someone else.

Yeah, it was a great night...

Well, he wasn't, but straight men at gay clubs is not all that uncommon. You don't have to be gay to go to a gay club, just as you don't have to be a rower to go to a rowing club.

Cube has problems, though, in that people mill around the outside (Petrie Plaza). Drunks leaving Mooseheads and druggos getting some fresh air out the front of Cube don't mix all that well.

Cube is like south pacs, or quattro's - its a place that sometimes seems like a hilarious place to go with your mates once youre about 20 schooeys into the night. I always figured Cube was the safer option. Apparantly not.
Going in there without a girl on your arm might get a bit wierd, but I've always had a good time in there (from what i can remember).

Seriously, you guys are absolutely hilarious with your innuendos. Let me tell you as someone who has DJed in both gay (including Cube) and straight venues over Canberra, Sydney and Newcastle that the behaviour of gay men in gay clubs is no better or worse than those of straight men in straight venues. The (straight) venue I played at on Saturday night threw out a guy and a girl for having sex in the girls toilets, and I also had to stop the music for about 10 minutes while security attended to a guy that had been knocked out by a king hit. The (gay) venue I played at on Friday night had absolutely no problems at all, other than a couple of drunken idiots.

It's like the E versus alcohol argument.

You won't get into a fight at a rave, but hey...
