FORMER Western Reds player Andrew Hill, one of the key figures in Perth's bid for an NRL licence, says the proposed new franchise does not need a high-profile recruit to guarantee the team's future.
Hill, the NRL's director of league integration and game development, was impressed by the show of support for rugby league in WA during a recent visit to Perth.
"While there are a number of options in the sporting landscape here, the one common bond is they're all representing WA on a national stage," Hill said.
"I know how passionate the people here are about their state, so I think there's already enough support from WA and they'll get behind any team that's truly representing their state on the national stage.
"Perth won't have to worry about attracting a big name just for the sake of getting that exposure because I think that exposure is already here."
Hill was a reserve-grade player with the Reds during their short stint in the NRL in the mid-1990s, as well as a coaching and developing manager with the now defunct club.
