Foxtel, propping up afl in the ACT.

I had to laugh at this.

They are claiming the Roos-Demons clash at Canberra a "sell out" after Foxtel purchased all the tickets and will now GIVE them away via sporting clubs in the hope of ensuring they all go to the game? It's a sell out in more ways than one, just ask the 4 season ticket holders. :D

http://www.abc.net.au/sport/content/200505/s1364294.htm

The round 11 AFL match between the Kangaroos and Melbourne at Manuka Oval on June 5 is a sell-out after pay TV operator Foxtel purchased all available tickets for the match.

Manaka Oval holds close to 15,000 fans and following the allocation to members and corporate supporters 9,000 tickets were left on sale.

Foxtel has bought all of them and will give the tickets away at selected licensed clubs in Canberra from Sunday with a limit of four per person.

The Kangaroos' Canberra manager Richard Collard said the aim was to ensure that all people who pick up the free tickets went to the game.

"The 9,000 tickets will now be distributed to selected licensed clubs in Canberra, they will be given free to fans from this Sunday," he said.

He said the club would try to compensate season ticket holders who paid to attend the game.

"The Kangaroos' management is now working out a package for season ticket holders and members who have already purchased tickets for the game."

I wonder if Fatty Patty from the Australian will be commenting on this? I know his favourite claim, re-the popularity of afl are the crowds, but really, with 2/3's getting in for free, the popularity of this code in the ACT must be somewhat misrepresented?

History tells us that most of the 9,000 tickets would have been snaffled-up regardless of the Foxtel intervention.

The Kangaroos (arguably the smallest crowd drawer in the AFL) still averages 11,500 at Manuka, even though it commonly draws fellow crowd battler (Melbourne) and other non-VIC sides for matches at the venue.

The Foxtel initiative is not new in sport, and RL is no stranger to the concept of free ticket giveaways (on occasion).

On Fatprick Smith... I loathe him as much as most sports fans do, but we can perhaps cut him a break at the moment because he's laid-up after busting his back and other limbs after falling off his roof.

Hmmm.

A colleague has just shown me his article in today's Australian, so it looks as if he's returned to writing today.

Haven't missed the clown an ounce!

I'll give it a couple of days before he gets back on form and finds a way to work a 'Hawthorn - line in the sand' angle into an article on horse racing
