France 26- Ireland 18

France got off to a great start to their Euro Nations Cup campaign with a comprehensive victory over the Irish in Dublin.

Was a game off two contrasting halves with France scoring all their points in the first half and Ireland all their 18 points in the second.

On a really pleasing note for the Irish, Carl D Chenu became one of only a handful of players to progress from the doemstic RLI competition to full international status. It is great to see players from the Imerald Isle and the Euro Nations Cup seems like a great competition to blood these young players.

We now have Wales and Ireland who have shown they are willing to have domestic players represent their countries. Scotland have a few in their squad and let's hope we can see some of those players also represent this year.

this is exactly what international league needs

a way for domestic players to progress through to the national side

hopefully in the future we will see teams from wales, scotland, ireland as well as france in the super league so these talented players can show their talents in a pro comp which will hopefully stop them being paoched by yawnion.

SOME YAWN-YAWN fans have been critical of RL's approach of creating a national rep side first before creating a successful domestic comp

but i think nations such as Wales, Lebanon, Ireland, and hopefully soon greece and italy have proved those yawn yawn fans

may international league continue to prosper

Another pleasing result. France must have played well to put 26 past quite a good Irish side in the first half, then most likely clocked off. And then an irish domestic product steps up and sets up the first try. The article on the front page says the kid is off to Sheffield next season, so he must go alright.

But overall I'm more pleased for the French who seem to have a much stronger side this year than in the past couple of years. The Irish side contained the likes of Anthony Stewart who wouldn't be too far off a GB wing spot, and Leeds Francis Cummins. If anyone knows the full Irish lineup can you type in this thread.

Hopefully French League can hang on to most of these young players who seem to be going quite well.

This is the team I had for last weeks game against Scotland, I assume it's similar to the team that played in Dublin

1 Francis Cummins (Leeds)
2 Rob Smyth (Warrington)
3 Anthony Stewart (St Helens)
4 Lee Doran (Oldham)
5 Dean Gaskell (Warrington)
6 Paul Handforth (Wakefield)
7 Neil Roden (Oldham)
8 Richard Marshall (London)
9 Phil Cantillon (Halifax) (C)
10 Mick Slicker (Huddersfield)
11 James King (Barrow)
12 Phil Farrell (Oldham)
13 Shane McMenemy (Hull)

14 Tommy Gallagher (Leeds)
15 David Bates (Gateshead)
16 Karl Fitzpatrick (Salford)
17 Chris Maye (St Helens)

Very few of which didn't qualify under the stinkin' grandparent rule.

steve mascord of the SMH said he was there for the game on the radio this morning, he stated that the crowd was around 600 or so. He also went on to speak of the Wales Russia game last week.

Must say that it's good to see a RL journo knowing about these sorts of competitions.

Long may the Euro nations cup survive and hopefuly prosper into something bigger.

Carl De Chenu is another of the real success from the Irish RL student side and from there he made the GB student cubs v 2002 touring Penrith Panthers (Rodney, Pritchard, Galea, Turner) and impressed the Panthers coaching staff so much that he was invited to have trials with Penrith, he was still at Uni though and instead signed with Sheffield earlier this year.

With he and Brian Carney it shows me that Ireland is an untapped area for quality RL players.

He has gone to Sheffield so the next step will be the Super League, it's also pleasing to see players coming out of the development areas.

great to see all these teams playing.all the scores bar the russian 1 have been very close(give russia time)atleast when we do eventually have a world cup, these teams will have played each other alot and so there shouldnt be to many blow out scores which is great.

i just hope that the irl keep these tournys going long term so all the home nations and euro nations continue to grow and get stronger.with the way its going with close scores over there it wont take long for crowds to start growing aswell.never know with sport, people see there team winning and all of a sudden everyone wants a peice of them.

lets hope wales put up a great show against aus.theres another nation which has the chance of being a top rugby LEAGUE nation. :D
