That's one of the most ridiculous things I've read.

Fact is, I'm not going to buy an album on heresay. If it's a band I love then yes I'll buy the album anyway but if it's a band I've heard about but want to sample first then I'm going to want to hear it first - not 30 seconds of one song but the entire album so I can make a full assessment of its merits. If I like, I buy.

I'm not denying the artist anything, in fact in many cases I'm only buying the album because I've had the opportunity to download it first. If I don't buy it, well I wasn't going to anyway so where's the loss?

Simple

what did you do before downloading?

If you want to hear before you buy, there's plenty of avenues open for you, hell, they'll even out it on in a record store if you ask.

Fact is, it is stealing.
Talk to some independant artists who live day to day, and ask what they think about people downloading their albums for nothing through limewire

Very few artists that live day to day are popular enough to have their music shared on the internet. I would never download the music of a small band or artist.

By the way, being able to download music has introduced me into new genres of music I would never have otherwise been interested in. It's seen me buy more records than I ever would have otherwise. It's not all bad.

Exactly right Balmain Boy.

So Fish Eel, do you expect me to walk into a record store (of which very few stock what I want to hear anyway), grab 15 albums then walk to the counter and say 'Hi there, I'd like to listen to these 15 albums in their entirity - do you mind if I set up my tent and deck chair here?'

Listening to two minutes of one song from a 70-minute album isn't going to tell me much.

Thats rubbish.

Plenty of local Australian acts, who get played on your triple m's and triple j's of the world, also work second hand jobs and dont see any return from their albums because they're in debt to theior record company.

Its only a small minority who eek out a living.

Justify it all you want.

Just because you can do it in your bedroom and get away with it doesnt make it right.

Mate, read what was written.

How many of those artists' albums are accessible on the internet? A small percentage.

They are? Excellent. I might download some stuff tonight. I might even like it and buy it, thus contributing money to their pockets which they would never have received had I not downloaded their music to listen to ...

I have no problem with people who download music to sample and then buy, however the problem is the vast majority don't go onto buy. Which is why music sales have suffered so badly. Alas the conundrum we face.... As for a solution? sorry I don't have one, I guess Itunes is a start, but theres a long way to go

Yes, well that is a problem but I'll just stick to my methods - as I said I love owning CDs rather than merely having files on my laptop or iPod

Yeah they're disgracefully priced in this country.

If I buy in bulk, it's actually significantly cheaper for me to order in the US and have them shipped here.

Cheaper Cds wouldn't go astray.

aye.

it costs like $20 and most often more to buy an album....same thing happens with movies...noone goes to movies or rents them when they can download them. sh*t is way to expensive.

I am all for downloading a few tracks to see if I like them. If I do, I'll go buy the album. If not, then I'll most likely delete it. If you download whole albums, then you are stealing and it is no better than shoplifting.

Yeah i agree with sampling or downloading songs to see what they are like, downloading whole albums is not something i agree with.

and of course, every person who downloads always says they then go and buy the cd....

Music Downloading is here to stay and little can be done about it.

If you download my music and like it I would apreciate it if you buy it because I put my heart and soul into the songs I write and music is my living.
Record companies don't pay well, gigs don't pay well, recorded music is one of the remaining avenues for songwriters to make a living and believe me the time you spend does not even come close to the renumeration you receive from APRA/AMCOS

If you download my music with no intention of buying it you are a thieving prick, but I can't do anything about that.

Many independant musos will allow people to download their music to gain exposure, it is a long shot but if it comes off great, each to their own.

Show Musos the respect they deserve because you gain plenty of pleasure from their skills.
