Free speech and Union - two things that don't belong in the same sentence.
I try to watch a bit of Union from time to time, you know, hoping that the won't waste getting all the elements of a good game together and an actual game of running rugby will break out (it never happens).
The thing that really gets up my nose about the commentators is that it is obvious they treat the audience like fools. You know they see dirty play, you know they often feel the ref gets calls wrong, you know they often think the game is as boring as bat shit, but all they do is mouth empty platitudes about how nice the world in union is.
Every time I think of Union now I think of the movie 'Pleasantville', which is basically about people being stuck into a 1950's type, mid-west American steriotyped, black and white, cliche ridden world. Everyone went around saying 'nice' things, while underneath, you could see that they all wanted to experience a bit of colour and to be able to say what they thought.
This site being locked down now strikes me as reflecting the real world. Union is a sport you have to be 'Pleasant' about, just like in 'Pleasantville'. Saying what you think is for people who arn't stuck in a 1950's, middle class, cliche ridden world.
