The coach and captain have very confidently said after each loss that we've remained competitive, "it's not like we're getting flogged each week"... The talk has always been pretty positive - we'll work hard, we'll come good, we'll bounce back...
Until now.
... we've gone from scoring 4 points, to 18 points, to 8 points, to 10 points. ... and yesterday we conceded 50 in a single game.
Now we're embarrassed, and apologising to fans and the club. Suggesting the club "deserves better".
A few weeks ago the boys credited Gould's SMH column - where he questioned their ticker - as the motivation to bounce back and steal a win against the early title favourites, Parra. Gould later rubbished the idea and said any team who doesn't have a point to prove week-in, week-out is a simple pack of pretenders. Gould has just been vindicated.
All the talk in the off-season was about a new attitude - about going from full-time to professional... and that anything short of a run in the finals this year would be unacceptable.
A 50-10 hiding by South Sydney is unacceptable in any event - but when you cop such a hiding on the back of four straight losses (even if you've remained "competitive" in all of them), then it doesn't matter if you make the finals at the end of the year. You've already handed your fans and your club the very definition of "unacceptable".
I just don't care if we make the finals anymore. The only thing that matters is that we patch our season up as best we can, so we can proceed with a little bit of dignity.
