It's officially the end of Futurama. Comedy Central have not renewed the series and the second half of season 7 will begin to air in June.

It has come back from the dead before, but in my opinion, this will be the end of the line as the new episodes and 4 movies have been very woeful. The original run from 1999-2003 were the best episodes.

The Planet Express ship will soon make its final delivery.
Comedy Central has decided not to renew Futurama, which means that the 31st-century-set animated comedy will end its 140-episode run on Sept. 4. The final 13 episodes, which represent the second half of season 7, begin airing on June 19 at 10 p.m.
Futurama is no stranger to cancellation, of course: The series aired from 1999 to 2003 before Fox sent Fry & Co. into oblivion. After thriving in reruns on Adult Swim, Futurama was relaunched in 2007 with four-direct-to-DVD movies that Comedy Central ran in half-hour increments as a 16-episode fifth season in 2008-09. Comedy Central subsequently ordered a sixth season of 26 episodes, which aired in 2010-11, and a seventh season of 26 episodes, the first half of which debuted in 2012.
The news did not come as a shock to executive producer David X. Cohen and creator Matt Groening, who had thought their space explorations were ending three previous times (after the Fox run, after the four movies, and after Comedy Central’s first 26-episode order). “I felt like we were already in the bonus round on these last couple of seasons, so I can’t say I was devastated by the news,” Cohen tells EW. “It was what I had expected two years earlier. At this point I keep a suitcase by my office door so I can be cancelled at a moment’s notice.”

The series won the Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program twice, in 2002 and 2011. It has declined in the ratings, though, averaging 2.6 million viewers in 2010, 2.3 million in 2011, and 1.7 million in 2012.
Comedy Central’s EVP of Programming Dave Bernath views the network’s decision as “the natural end” to the show’s improbable comeback. “That’s a helluva run that few shows achieve, and especially given the fact that it came back to life, it’s really an amazing story,” he says. “I’m more thankful and feel a sense of gratitude toward the whole process — and that we found a way to keep going for 52 more episodes — than I really am even thinking about the ending. It’s a blessing that it came back and lasted so long.”
The producers say that they are exploring options for a new home for the show, but there are no serious talks at this point. “We’ve been in this situation before and it’s tempting when you’re doing episodes that are as good or better than anything you’ve ever done to continue doing it,” Groening tells EW. “We’re catching our breath and seeing what the fans have to say. The experience of this show has been so much fun from the very beginning to now — everybody is so happy to work on this show — that it’d be a shame if we all went our separate ways… We would love to continue. We have many more stories to tell. But if we don’t, this is a really great way to go out… I think these episodes are the best ones we’ve ever done.”
Cohen calls the final run — which features such guests as Larry Bird, Sarah Silverman, George Takei, Adam West, Dan Castellaneta, and Burt Ward — “our best ‘last season ever’ ever,” noting that there are “a bunch of episodes that I think are going to be classics.” In one installment, Futurama is “reincarnated as various cartoons of your youth, not legally resembling but somehow quite reminiscent of Scooby-Doo, Strawberry Shortcake, and G.I. Joe,” he says. And the series finale, which features a wedding between Fry and Leela, is “a tasteful, emotional gorefest,” he raves. “There’s a lot of death but there’s also a lot of time travel, so that makes for an interesting combination.” Adds Groening: “It’s a really satisfying ending. It’s an epic ending. If indeed it’s the ending.”
If, indeed. Somehow we’ll see Bender shout “Bite My Shiny, Revived Metal Ass!” down the road, right? “Perhaps Futurama will return in another form, on the Internet, or as a puppet show in the park,” says Groening. “Or maybe as a puppet show in the park on the Internet.” Deadpans Cohen: “As I said three times before, this is definitely the absolute end of the show. I don’t know why nobody believes me when I say that.”

The new episodes of Futurama are about on par with the new episodes of the Simpsons i.e. you'll get some sporadic random laughs but the overall stories were stupid and you never feel invested in the outcome of any episode.

Shame when great shows end. Even worse when they drag on for too many seasons and end up having to be taken out back and shot (the simpsons surely must not be too far from the chopping block).

Some shows are weird, you don't rush to the telly when they're on or remind yourself to tape them etc, but if you happen across them you find them quite good. This show was one of those for me.

Yeah like a lot of my favourite shows... the original/old episodes were the best.

Zapp Brannigan is probably one of my favourite characters across all TV shows I like.

Really? I actually thought it was marketed quite well. It was originall on channel 7 and was shown as being a spin-off to the Simpsons (which, ironically, was going to end in 1999 when this show kicked-off).

Naturally The Simpsons will always be funnier and more successful than Futurama, and there's no way the Futurama was going to work well while MG was still working on The Simpsons. I mean I'm surprised that the 5 original seasons were that good.

I haven't been able to get into it since they brought it back which is a shame as it was probably my fav show before it was canned. I don't think I've even finished the movies...

Obviously from my user name i'm a big fan.

Agree that it never got to the same level as it was at before originally getting canceled (which I though was some of the best animated shows ever). Not just funny, but had a sense of adventure, sci-fi, and emotional moments.

I've got all seasons, and movies, on DVD, I've watched the first 4 seasons repeatedly, but the rest only once each.

The new episodes were on par with the older ones IMO and the 'films' were also very good.

Like all comedy shows there are good episodes, excellent episodes and classics. With futurama there were barely any stinkers throughout the series.

Bulldog Force really has no idea, Groening has more influence on futurama than he does on the simpsons and has done so pretty much since the series started. It's no coincidence that the simpsons started to go downhill when Groening stepped aside from the daily running of the Simpsons which was around the same time as when futurama began.

IMO the show has finished at the right time, still funny and still doing well. Bender, Fry, Zoidberg, Hermes, The Professor, Zapp, Hedonism Bot, Calcalon, Roberto, Clamps, Joey Mousepad, Don Bot are great characters and Leela and Amy will be in my dreams for years to come.

Thought it was awful since the return to Comedy Central. Shadow of its former self.

As I said, the whole older episodes > new episodes thing is something I feel about pretty much every show I like. I can't even really think of a TV show that I don't feel that way about off the top of my head. It's not like the new episodes are terrible, just feels like they aren't as enjoyable as the original series.

Agree with Zoidberg that it was more than just a comedy.

Some very unique characters in the show. Zoidberg & Zapp would have to be my top two.

I think it's got something to do with time. The producers/directors have all these wonderful ideas during the original run, then if there is a hiatus or even worse, a calculation then attempted revival, the ideas have change, the staff have changed, probably even the producers have changed, and it's simply not the same show.

I liked the new episodes actually. Futurama had some great characters and some great concepts they could play around with.

Anyway, I'm hoping the last episode is actually a finale and wraps up the story of the characters instead of leaving them open. I feel The Simpsons has gone past this opportunity to wrap the series up in a satisfying way and will instead fizzle out.

I'm not sure if this will happen. Remember the Single Female Lawyer episode?
