The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

That didn’t sound all that salty. Just a description of what has transpired and the ridiculousness of spending $1.6B on a temporary stadium that will never be used again when you could upgrade/reconfigure the Gabba to 45K AND rebuild Suncorp at 65K for the $2.6B total that they are spending on the three venues.
If the plan is for QSAC to be good enough to host annual World Athletics events then it is worth the spend.

The World Athletics Diamond League has an annual event at this tiny stadium in New York.

QSAC at 14k will be almost three times as big.

Qsac doesn't need a train line, they'll just extend the busway which is just as effective.

In terms of an inconvenient location, have you been to Garden City and the surrounds? Brisbane's southside is home to upwards of 1.2m people and the Stadium pretty much sits at the end of the Ipswich Motorway, essentially opening it up to the population of the west also.
So much can be done with QSAC. It should be turned into a boutique athletics stadium and host World Athletics events and international speedway.

$1.6b on QSAC has always been questionable but let’s not forget the quotes for the Victoria Park stadium had it as the second most expensive stadium ever built behind SoFi in LA. That’s pre-blowouts, and for only 55k capacity. There goes the whole budget for a stadium that post-Olympics will hardly ever sell out. Meanwhile come 2032 Suncorp is 30 years since last upgrades and well overdue for a capacity increase and facelift at the very least.

Part of the QSAC money is allocated to improving transport links to not only the stadium but the nearby hospital, Uni and the area in general. It won’t have a train station but the separated busway to/from the city runs through the area which will have the increased capacity “Metro” up and running. Chances are they’ll also run shuttle buses to one of the Beenleigh/Gold Coast line rail stations which are only a few kms away then extra/express trains on those lines. Yes there will be road closures and disruption but that’s hardly uncommon for major events.

QSAC used to hold Broncos games in the 90s, pre-busway and at a higher capacity. It won’t be flawless by any means but for 10 days of athletics at 40k capacity it will get the job done. Suggesting it will all fall in a heap is alarmist.

At this stage options suggested are (with a bit of guess work):
- 60-65k Suncorp with a “facelift”.
- 40-45k Gabba with a “facelift”. (will have a train station with cross-river rail).
- 15k QSAC with world class athletics facilities and improved transport to the area including Uni & Hospital.

Or:

- 55k Victoria Park stadium which will be lucky to sell out 2-3 times a year post-Olympics and still isn’t big enough to lure the likes of Taylor Swift.
- 52k Aging Suncorp Stadium which will still regularly sell out but be well overdue for an upgrade and capacity increase.
- Demolished or downsized Gabba.

I think the former is a better end result for Brisbane.

Wests Tigers have confirmed where the club will be playing its NRL home games over the next three years.

CommBank Stadium will host four Wests Tigers home games in 2025, 2026 and 2027.

Campbelltown Sports Stadium will host four games in 2025 and 2026, with an option for the 2027 season.

Leichhardt Oval will host three home games plus the team’s last trial match, in 2025 and 2026, with an option for the 2027 season.

Wests Tigers will continue to support the NRL’s Magic Round with a home game to be played as part of the Brisbane extravaganza in 2025, 2026 and 2027.

The club has arrived at this three-year stadium policy after months of detailed planning, consultation, customer research and negotiations, involving key stakeholders, including councils and venue operators.

Leichhardt Oval and Campbelltown Sports Stadium will be undergoing much-needed improvements over the next couple of years, which will undoubtedly reduce the capacity at these venues during the construction phase.

A decision on playing home games at these venues in the 2027 season will not be made until construction timelines and ground capacities have been confirmed.

Wests Tigers CEO Shane Richardson says the club’s stadia plan has been shaped by many factors.

“A joint venture will always face difficulties around venue selection,” said Richardson.

“Our members and fans know that we will always make decisions which we believe are in the best interests of this club.

A longer-term decision on home grounds cannot be made until we have all the details around stadium improvements, and construction timelines.

“We are excited and proud to continue building our community in the south-west and Macarthur region, and playing games in Campbelltown is a big part of that.

“Equally, we look forward to the improvements at Leichhardt Oval, so that we can continue to call it our home as well.

"CommBank Stadium is an amazing place to watch footy which will give our members first class facilities to enjoy the Wests Tigers’ match day experience.

“It will also provide significant commercial opportunities that are needed for Wests Tigers to grow and become a top four club.”

Well that’s all very unexciting

Not for an Olympic games it's not
I really don't see why not. The site has hosted the commonwealth games athletics, Broncos games when they were averaging 43k and the Super League GF. I was regularly there when the Broncos would have 50k in attendance and it wasn't that bad to get in and out of and that was in the 90's before all the upgraded transport that will be in place for the Olympics.

Was hoping they would play vast majority at CommBank until the other 2 parks are suitable.

What about when tigers host easter monday?
Ideally there should be games at accor to take advantage of the show crowds, this game has got 50k in the past.

I wonder what improvements he is talking about for Campbelltown also, none confirmed that I know about.
