I’d rather see a 300m Suncorp upgrade happen now than nothing happen at all for the next 20 years. Gives time for AFL to really entrench into Qld with a second Brisbane team in their fancy new home built by tax payers.

honestly there’s soccer and union in the olympics and Suncorp / rectangular sports still get totally shafted. Even Swimming could have been hosted at an upgraded Suncorp.

If they could get Suncorp to 60k for $200-300m that seems like it would be a decent ROI considering prices today. Considering some of the other money being thrown around in places like Victoria Park & Centenary Pool for the Olympics or Hobart & Penrith as non-Olympic examples.

It’s a shame in the $7.1b budget they couldn’t find the money to get it done. A second smaller rectangular stadium and arena too for that matter. Have to say pretty big failure from all of the rectangular codes.

This was what should’ve been discussed before the stadium decision was made not now

I’m sure if they put enough pressure on the govt they can get the upgrade to 60k
Why spend $1/2bill+ on a few thousand seats that still won't meet the demand? If it takes 10-15 years to replace Suncorp with a 70-75k new stadium so be it. That's a better long term outcome than adding 5k seats now and Suncorp staying at 60k for the next 30 years+. Better to play the long game.

Cause the govt has a very slim majority and they don’t want to get offside with most sports fans in qld by doing nothing for the major sport in Brisbane

Or just let it rot there, move magic round to Optus oval once Perth bears are in. Put some damn pressure on the government like the afl do.
Magic weekend, all stars, GF, Origin RLWC's, double headers. Those are the carrots to be dangling. But it has to be a genuine dangle. Vlandys has threatened to take GF from Sydney every year since taking over and never does, Im sure Qnd Govt have heard it all before and just smile when he comes out with statements like todays.

Good to see PVL finally has something to say about it and pretty strong words, hopefully he backs them up.

Let’s not forget Suncorp was in line to get substantial funding (a share of $1b) until this latest review & announcement. NRL hasn’t played it well but good to see they’re at least pissed off about it.

Hopefully with expansion nearly sorted for a while they can start putting more effort in to some stadium improvements for their clubs who need it.

The Auckland Council decision on the city's main stadium is due this Thursday.

The feasibility reports seem to lean towards upgrading Eden Park - but mostly because "it's already there". Hmm...

Eden Park should have just bitten the bullet and made their proposal fully rectangular, they’re doing 3 new stands anyway. They’ll probably still pick it.

Hopefully they go waterfront, it’s central, near the main train station with room for it’s own station and above all it’s actually the right fit for the main sports. All Blacks will obviously be the biggest draw game by game but Warriors would be the solid anchor tenant bringing in 20k+ 12 times a year.

I feel like making a case for a rectangular stadium upgrade in Brisbane of all places would be a shoe in.

Union and soccer are literally in the Olympics.
Brisbane actually has a need for a modern large rectangular stadium given crowds they get.

Yet afl gets not one but two new stadiums free of charge and rectangular sports get f**k all.

He’s failed with Sydney stadium upgrades too tbf
Him and Andrew Abdo. What the f**k are they doing about stadiums?

We’ve got grounds either bursting at the seams like Suncorp and Auckland, or falling apart like Canberra.

Meanwhile we’re setting record crowds.

It’s inconceivable that they’ve not made any plans for the future.

Anyone could see what was going on with the Quirk report but our entire game missed it completely. Massive failure and heads should roll.

Peter V’Landys has been completely shamed and outdone by the AFL on this.

Too busy sucking back Vegas cocktails on this occasion.

Stadium policy is more than pokey upgrades to Sydney suburban grounds.
Bit harsh

Shows what’s going to happen when he leaves nobody else in the game has a clue

Where’s the two qld politicians on the arlc in this

Or Ben Ikin

Or the two Brisbane nrl clubs

Courier mail are now calling for Suncorp to get an upgrade

All have failed in a big way.

The QRL and the two Brisbane NRL clubs didn’t even bother to meet with the Quirk review team.

Billions of dollars being splashed on sporting facilities in their patch, but they must have been too busy.

No party should be spared from this. Most especially NRL Chair and CEO.

I edited to post the courier mail story saying don’t forget about the number one sport

I think if Pvl complains now Suncorp will get that 60k upgrade which is better than nothing

Robert cradsock is the first journo today who has written something questioning why rugby league missed out

Maybe the rectangular field based sports will lobby for the Hamilton option now.

Would give Bne two quality stadiums for the rugby codes and soccer.

Plus an alternative concert / big event venue
