No. They just can't use those stadiums I think for a month before so the grass is at it's best. Potentially a bit longer. And plenty of requirements for minium stadium standards. We would need to rebuild stadium australia if it was to happen.

As for the other part, only need to look that the World Cup happening in the USA next. No chance they stop all sports for FIFA. Just means those stadiums are out of play. Lucky it's the NFL offseason for them. Not something that we could force.

Other stuff like the organises must provide 'clean stadiums'. Stadiums revert to a 'no name' eg AAMI Park becomes Melbourne Rectangular Stadium whenever Australia plays a World Cup qualifier. Sponsors within the ground are also removed for world cup games as FIFA sells sponsorship packages so they get the $.

That would pretty much exhaust Australia for host cities unless Canberra wanted to throw it's hat into the ring and finally build the right stadium.

Given the increased number of teams going to the WC, I agree with you that we would need to co-host with say Indonesia and NZ do to cost. And hopefully it means new/upgraded rectangular stadiums.

Yep agreed, which is why I'd love him to really take up the fight as his next mission.

Should have a list of goals for what they want it to look like in the next 10 years and just keep chipping away at it at every opportunity.

2026 WC is using 16 stadiums, 12 hold over 65k. Smallest is 45k. FIFA would want multiple massive stadiums, not just ACCOR. Indo has some big stadiums, but half have athletics tracks. NZ only has Eden Park.
If we co-hosted with NZ and Indo, and stadiums that are oval or have aths tracks are ruled out, then there is much work to be done.

That said, it is the type of event where we would want decent legacy outcomes for rectangular stadiums in places like Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, Canberra, Newcastle and Wollongong.

The closeness of the stadiums was due to the small size of Qatar. The almost endless amount of oil money also allowed them the build all new state of the art stadiums to showcase what their country can do/has. Those same situations don't exist in Australia, and if we are lucky to win the rights to host the WC, yes we will get some some stadiums (hopefully) organisers will probably look to upgrade or use existing stadiums to keep costs down. I could be wrong but we will be lucky to get 6 or 7 new stadiums, especially if we host the tournament with neighbouring countries.

Indonesia has 6 stadiums over 40k. If we could get 6 X 40k+ stadiums in aus/nz it’d certainly be doable. Wouldnt imagine Indonesia is high in Fifa’s priority list though.

The world cup next year will have 104 matches, played in 16 stadiums, across 39 days, with 48 teams taking part. USA (11), Mexico (3) and Canada (2), are the co hosts, with the hosting stadiums in brackets.

In 2030, Spain, Portugal and Morocco will be the main co hosts. Although there will be one match each in Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.

So there shouldn't be a debate about Australia hosting on it's own, but rather who it co-hosts with? Sure Saudi Arabia will host every match in 2034, but yeah they won the bid in an uncontested bidding process. No backroom deals here!

That's around $4 to $5 Billion at a minimum. And more like $10B realistically.
