As Timbo pointed out, the SCG predates central.

Sure the SFS shouldn't have been built where it was in 1988, that's a mistake.

But yes, having a hilly city significantly impacted early planning for Sydney. So did the harbour.

Speak to an urban panning expert, flat cities were significantly easier to plan in the past.

I was talking about Allianz, not scg. Hence why I mentioned better planners needed in the 80's! Should have built Allianz somewhere accessible to the train station, not at the top of a hill 2km away with no infrastructure. Like I said Sydney has sht city planners.

Apparently only 50k on the Friday and 35k on Saturday. Seemed like a lot more than that.

Other events were probably Ed Sheeran , think he sold it out at least once.

By the late 80s, land prices were already fairly expensive so they had to go with what they had. Ten years later when they went for a new stadium for the Olympics they went for a greenfield site and we got Homebush - creating the exact problem we're arguing about.

It's not as simple as going 'build it next to a railway station'. You need a giant footprint to put the stadium on which don't exist next to any existing rail hubs. And before anyone suggests Hyde Park or the park next to central, whilst you may like football and I may like football there is simply no way on planet earth that crown land that is designated public green space in the CBD would ever be turned over to be turned into a stadium.

Furthermore, I already think that's enough per year to justify retaining the the 83000 capacity with a rebuild, but if it needs to drop to 75000 for it to be a perfect rectangular stadium, I'd be satisfied with that.
I don't think it should be any less though as our cities major stadium.
How many times a year does the MCG reach capacity? 2/3/4?

The new capacity is 72k, not 75k.

Remember though with the concerts they'll only lose 5k seats as the stage covers one end. (The 10k seats are lost in the squaring off of each end)

Only place I can think of is over the rail lines leading into central. There's actually talk of selling this air space to developers. Unsure if a stadium could work engineering wise.

Probably easier to build a rail line to Moore park.

Hopefully the eastern suburbs metro gets built. Talk is it will go along underneath oxford st & then turn south. So a stop at Paddington would be an easy walk. (300m)

Could grab the Wentworth Park land. Its a f*cking greyhound track, so youll hardly get the tree huggers out protesting....

Or, if you want to get properly creative, put it out over the water off one of the harbour docks like the Auckland proposal.

This East sydney stadium doesnt need to be Sydneys big stadium. A boutique stadium of 20-30k might be workable in a better location that Moore Park.

Wentworth park is just as far as Moore park from any train lines. (Although the new west metro might go close to there)

It's about 200 metres from a light rail stop, but I agree it's access is poor. It's 2kms from Town Hall Station.

I feel the best bet is getting the south-east metro to have a stop at Moore Park.

I feel that metro will have to be built through the east in the medium term in any case due to the sheer density of housing that's being built in the Maroubra/Pagewood/Botany area. If so, then a stop underground at the SFS would be happy bonus.

The MCG reaches capacity around 4 times per year, the difference is that it is at least half full every week. Plus if ANZ held 40k it would still only be full 3/4 times per year. For AFL 25k seats for MCC members and 25k for AFL members. Some clubs have 20k+ reserved seat holders so there are only 20k - 30k seats for sale. You can have a sellout with 80k - 85k.
Not ideal, but selling those access memberships helped fund the stadium. MCC has 103k members and 230k on waiting list. Full membership is $675. Do those sums.

Actually it is 2.5km to central, which is about the same distance walking from ANZ to Lidcombe station (except theres also a train from ANZ that takes you to Lidcombe)...

How far is it from Strathfield?

If you used the Tibby Cotter "Walkway" in walking from Allianz Stadium to Central you would have to follow more than 1 road. You would have to walk further using that bridge as it is not on the shortest route between Allianz Stadium and Central Railway Station at all. Rather than Kippax Lake as the site for a new Stadium. Do it on the otherside of Anzac Pd. There is a huge dirt mount that would suit a stadium pretty good next to the high school

Why not Belmore Park or Victoria Park to the South

Or use the land where Paddy Markets is

The trick is to look for old disused areas to transform like old rail yards
