Can you physically do much to shark park now it is hemmed in? Where would you put a big new stand for example? Couldn't put it on LC side and with new CofE on other side surely that will limit any further development of the stand on that side?

There's already plans floating around to develop the stadium. It connects the Monty porter stand to an extended ET stand with a COE behind it. Capacity will stay at suburban capacity but the corporate and training facilities get a massive upgrade.

Of course the plans might change as the needs change.

reading the tea leaves
I believe the COE at the ground is off the table now at the moment.

they want it at..where the toyota site was is but don't want to co own with the new owners blah blah

anyway. on the burns side, theres gonna be a quest hotel where one hill was and a club on the other. meaning that we have less standing room. i believe the plan is to have concrete bleachers with grass..kind of landscaping you can sit / stand on underneath the new club area where people can watch the game from this viewing deck.

the family hill has the powerlines above. which limits stuff. but you could realistically put double the amount of the seats behind the posts at a higher rake.

the best thin they could do is extend the ET stand to each end, and have double the amount of seats at the north end and seats in front of the southern stand. long term thats what they can do without a total rebuild which wouldn't happen anyway.

If it were up to me i would have knocked the entire burns side down including the seats, and rebuilt from concourse up as like..one big wall of fans like at robina and then corporate suites above that.

Australia shaping as favourites for the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Can only be a good thing for sports infrastructure spending.

nah. NZ hosted a RWC and its stadiums are worse than here. It’d drive a few upgrades but not much in the way for big projects. The RWC only needs big stadia for the finals amd marquee games between heavyweights.

And nationally I think we’d have enough stadiums between Suncorp, Townsville, Perth and Melbourne and Sydney’s main stadiums.

It is probably a long shot, but the RWC may force the ACT Gov to get its shit together for a new stadium.
The Canberra situation seems quite straighforward to me. Why would Barr spend money on a stadium for rectangular sports? He already has them with little option for them to move elsewhere to force the issue. He doesn't have the fumblers, of course he's going to spend money trying to attract them to leverage more money into their community.

If he already had the fumblers, and no RL/Onion, he would be trying to attract the latter.

NRL 2021: Rabbitohs poised to dump ageing Stadium Australia as home ground for new SFS

NRL 2021: Rabbitohs poised to dump ageing Stadium Australia as home ground for new SFS | Daily Telegraph

They have enjoyed a long and fruitful association with Stadium Australia, but Souths may soon be on the move and playing closer to their spiritual home.

Dean Ritchie
June 16, 2021 - 4:14PM News Corp Australia Sports Newsroom

In an indication his famous club may return to playing games in Sydney’s east, Souths chief executive Blake Solly has spoken of the difficulties in “justifying” remaining at an ageing Stadium Australia.

The NSW Government is yet to announce renewed upgrade plans for the 22-year-old Stadium Australia, a silence which could push Souths to play matches out of the new Moore Park-based Sydney Football Stadium.

A shift east would be a homecoming as such for Souths, whose spiritual home at Redfern is just 3.2kms from the SFS.

Souths have been at Homebush since 2006.

Souths have been at Homebush since 2006.

Rabbitohs management expect to hold meetings in coming weeks with the State Government and NRL about whether the club will be directed to play from 2023.

The $780m rebuild of the Sydney Football Stadium is due for completion in time for the NRL finals next year.

Souths have enjoyed a strong and successful alliance with Stadium Australia since 2006 – and the club wants to remain loyal – but a move appears probable.

The NSW Government cancelled a planned $800 million redevelopment of Stadium Australia due to Covid last year.

“Clearly we have had a great relationship with Stadium Australia – they have been wonderful partners for our club,” Solly said.

“But it makes it very hard for us to justify staying at Stadium Australia when we know our members, fans and corporate partners deserve the best experience they can get - certainly at least one that will match the experience that fans, partners and members of other clubs are going to receive at the newly built stadiums.

“We have been asking for some time to understand what the government and NRL’s plans are for stadium investment.

“Hopefully we will get some understanding pretty soon, and then we can make a decision which is in the best interests of the football club, its members and partners.

“It (the SFS) is certainly close to our traditional heartland, but we also have a huge amount of members in western Sydney and outside the South Sydney area that love the club as well.

“We want to make sure that the supporters that have got behind us at Stadium Australia are equally well looked after at any new venue.”

Asked if he believed the NRL wanted Souths playing out of Moore Park, Solly said: “I’m not 100 per cent sure where the NRL wants us to play. but I suspect, like the government, they want the new stadium to be utilised as much as it can.

“We hope we can get around the table sooner rather than later. It’s clear when you drive past what is happening at Moore Park that it is moving along pretty quickly.

“We’ve been in discussions with NRL and government on improvements at Stadium Australia for seven years - so it would be good to finalise our long-term future sooner than later.”

NRL chief executive Andrew Abdo claimed there weren’t any plans for a redevelopment of Stadium Australia.

“I’m not aware of any redevelopment of ANZ Stadium but we are working with the NSW Government on a commitment to invest in suburban stadiums and infrastructure across the state. Those talks are ongoing,” Abdo said.

Abdo denied his organisation would force any club to play games at the SFS.

Russell Crowe has seen plenty of great Souths moments at Stadium Australia.

Russell Crowe has seen plenty of great Souths moments at Stadium Australia.

“We don’t dictate and we certainly don’t provide a view on where clubs should play their home games. They are absolutely autonomous in that regard,” Abdo said.

“But we want to help facilitate a great outcome for them and we want to make sure they are playing in the best venues possible.

“If the Rabbitohs would like (Moore Park) to be their base, and they feel like that is the right place to play, we will do all we can to help them get there. Clearly we want what is best for our clubs, fans and members. We are working with all Sydney-based clubs on their strategy for the long-term.

“Not just for when they play games but how we can help facilitate them growing a footprint in regional areas for one or two games a year. This stadium (SFS) is being built for a range of purposes. It’s not solely for the use of rugby league.”

Thinking about it, I think Easts and Souths will have a big increase in crowds with the new SFS.

Souths have their hard core that go week in week out at ANZ. Problem is that the number is not growing. The new SFS will be up the road from the new Heffron centre. Not to mention the Juniors are highly in favour of Souths moving back. Increased patronage and revenue for the Juniors club on game days with light rail directly in front of club to the SFS.

New SFS is perfect for NRL club games, if a Liverpool stadium does not come to fruition and the Wests Tigers are going to consider themselves an inner west club then I could see the benefits of them moving 8 games to the new SFS.

- 42,500 capacity
- 14,000 upper 2 tier's, 7,000 each tier on top which can be opened depending on demand.
- 3,000 Scg trust members reserve (just an assumption, think this will be on the second tier on western grandstand).
- 4,500 corporate seats (Assumption again). Real money spinner for the clubs that will be based there.
- 21,000 general public seats for NRL club game. Its the perfect size for NRL clubs with options of increasing capacity by 7,000 by opening one or 2 (14,000) of the top tiers.

I wouldnt say anz has been great for souths. Their attendances are pathetic for size of their fanbase and I suspect a lot has to do with how sht an 80% empty massive stadium is on game day for atmosphere and experience.

South’s would be crazy not to take advantage of the new SFS.
If they still want to appease their inner west fan base than take a handful of games to BW (or new Liverpool) and the rest to SFS.
Brand new rectangular stadiums on offer, why in hell use an outdated 83k oval. Madness. ANZ should only be used for GF and SOO, unless it gets a complete rebuild. West’s & Doggies should like wise.

Agree, but how do you justify upkeep and maintenance on a massive, aging stadium that is empty 360 days each year? Reckon it would end up being bulldozed. Is it such a big deal if you only have 42K at a GF or SOO? Best thing the NRL could do it to move the GF around.

It might put pressure on the NSW Gov to do a rebuild. It should’ve of been converted to a rectangular stadium after the Olympics but the afl had something to say, so maybe the Giants should take up residence.

Manuka probably needs upgrading as well, why not do both?

The point isn't that there is already a rectangular stadium in place, the point is that it is in a souless shit hole with no facilities nearby.

A world class 30k seat roofed stadium in the city would do wonders for the economy. Anyone who doubts this need only look at the boom that the Adelaide CBD has received since the upgraded Adelaide Oval has become home to their 2 AFL teams.

Problem for NRL is then revenue. Big events are an important part of NRL revenue and losing 40,000 ticket sales to a GF&SOO means either; the game becomes so expensive that your avg fan cant afford to go to a GF, the GF goes on the road to bigger stadiums or the NRL loses out on significant revenue. The problem is not the NRL's clubs though, its the NSW Govt and NRL's. Clubs need to get out of there and play in decent stadiums to build their own sustainability via fan generated revenue. Its clear the Govt has abandoned any update of ANZ and NRL seem ok with this so clubs now need to do what's best for them.

This.
8 games at SFS. 3 games at BW against clubs who play there so there is reciprocal membership admission for both clubs, meaning sell outs and benefits to buying full memberships, and one on the road to boost the coffers. This gives Souths fans a 14 game full membership and ensures the tribalism Vlandys keeps waffling on about actually leads to full stadiums.

GF tickets are ridiculously cheap. If the capacity is halved, just double the price. It will still cost far less than the AFL GF. Maybe triple the price. Or quadruple it.
There are lots of benefits for the NRL if demand exceeds supply. It will certainly boost membership if that is the only way to get a GF ticket. Could make SOO for members only as well.

The NRL will never go that route as:

1. The media, especially News Ltd, would excoriate them for "locking the public out" by denying the general public the ability to buy tickets and then jacking the prices up;

2. Corporates is where the big revenue is for the NRL. Point (1) would be exacerbated if they just reduced the availability of tickets to non-corporates;

3. Despite what the NRL may say publicly, they don't give a clacker about rewarding club members.
