I reckon if Cricket Australia replaced the stumps with garbage bins, play in Hang Ten Tees, Stubbies and thongs and replaced the ball with a tennis ball it would save the game here.

30k Gabba rebuild / patch up is the perfect solution for them

I thought their next step was further miniaturising the game to one hundred ball innings.

I love cricket, but all indicators show there is a diminishing demand for the game. The Ashes is like union’s Lions tour - the only high demand event.

Any Indian tour is now just as big as the Ashes. Indians here are keeping cricket alive. In my son’s last two cricket matches, 21 or his 22 opponents were from the sub-continent.

Big subcontinent background population in Australia. Only growing. They'll keep cricket alive. Their overall population is mammoth. Aussie cricket team will have more and more players of similar backgrounds as years go past.

$3bil stadium is nuts, you're on the cash there but the rhetoric of cricket is dying etc is far fetched. Queensland should get a crown jewel stadium + adjoining recreational and hospitality facilities tied into a precinct. Maybe something close to $1.5b to $2b is more realistic. But is it really? If there's major upgrades of infrastructure, roads and the like than maybe $3b for all of it isn't as nuts as it seems.

Indian/Pakistani/Bangadeshi/Afghan Australians will do to cricket in Australia what Polynesians have done to rugby league in the next decade. It won't be a majority white sport any more. (not a good or a bad thing, just the changing face of the game)

Earlier this week, the Crisafulli government revealed there had been a cost blow out for three smaller Olympic venues.
The bill for the new Chandler Indoor Sports Centre, the Sunshine Coast Indoor Sports Centre and to upgrade the Sunshine Coast outdoor stadium is more than $180 million above original estimates.
Cost savings will be looked at and scopes may have to be revised to fit within the $7.1 billion funding agreement struck between the Queensland and federal governments for the Games.
If the smaller venues are revised, the Crisafulli government may face backlash from local mayors.

Sunshine Coast Mayor Rosanna Natoli made it clear she was unhappy at the prospect of venues being scaled back.
"It is incredibly disappointing that we will be held up again for a 100 day review," she said on Thursday.
"Our community has been promised these facilities … These projects have been validated, they have been designed, they are ready to go."

Hamilton is equally as close. Literally next suburb after Newstead (which is after Fortitude Valley, which is after Brisbane CBD).

Guessing you never been to Brisbane to think it was fair ways out of the city?

Been quite a lot of times but only every stayed in the city. From the pics it looked a fair distance unlike Suncorp which was an easy walk from South bank the times I've been. 15mins on train is ok I suppose, bit further out than Optus or MCG but not as far as Accor. Stadiums as close to CBD as possible seem to be the go which makes sense from a sports and event tourism point of view.

It's a hop skip jump. You would have passed the northsore/Hamilton area every single time you went into brisbane as it serves as one of the connections between CBD and airport.

Close to the Breakky Creek hotel. It's only 3/4 mins longer to get from CBD to Hamilton or 2 mins longer to get from CBD to Vicky park as it is from CBD to suncorp stadium. Anyone ever had an issue with proximity between brisbane cbd and suncorp?

Looks like the stadium is going ahead one way or another in one of the 3 proposed locations.

As a local what's your view on where it should be?

Revamped Gabba with overpass from crossriver to stadium that consists of restaurants, outdoor areas above main road etc. buses and metro would service it as theres major stops there. main road, stanley and vulture would need major upgrades. close to south brisbane, south bank, kangaroo point and valley + eagle street pier opposite river

Victoria Park where old golf course was located with some sort of botanical gardens surrounding stadium? enough space but parking will be non existent due to hospital being right next to it and uni as well. public transport exists but only buses at the moment and would need upgrades. close to city, caxton precinct and new casino (relative).

Northshore hamilton where eat street currently is and a recently upgraded kingsford smith drive? opens up ferry transport but im not sure kingsford smith can take that much buses etc on event days without choking it to all traffic. close to city, valley, ferry can take you to casino

The Olympics before Brisbane, that main stadium will be rectangular. The last Olympics held the opening ceremony on a river.

Having a rectangular stadium host the big ceremonies could become the norm and have the track and field at another stadium.

having a legacy of olympics that includes
1. main stadium suitable for the most popular sports in the city that is used regularly
2. athletics stadium with modern facilities

certainly beats what many other cities have ended up with

on another note - how easy must it be to get the olympics nowadays - you don't even need to know what stadiums you are going to have 3 years after been given the hosting duties
Thankfully they still have 8 more years to decide
