Has their been any talk of the need for a second rectangular stadium in Brisbane for the Olympics? I thought the smaller stadiums needed for rectangular sports had been agreed with the bigger games at Suncorp?
I was referring to outside of the Olympics.
but yes also. If you’re going to spend 3b on one stadium that will leave bugger all for the rest.
The likes of Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, Cairns, will get far less spending and in some cases scrapped altogether. QLD doesn’t need a brand new 3b 60k AFL ground. A Gabba refurbished is more than adequate.

According to the independent reviews not.

No. SFS is great.
Homebush should’ve been made into a rectangular stadium after the Olympics but your AFL Mafia mob had their way and screwed over three other codes. That’s what I don’t want to happen to QLD.

The problem was that the NSW govt at the time allowed it to happen. They allowed pocket money from the AFL to coerce their decision.
They were just as much to blame.

Rectangular stadiums will be needed for rugby 7s, and soccer. In soccer's case they can be played across the country like they did in 2000.

From the top
We saw the post Sydney Olympics what a disaster it is building oval shaped stadia in rugby league states

60k is far too big for either cricket or afl

It will just be a major white elephant which is more than half empty for games

A total rebuild of Suncorp would also cost similar dollars but actually be useful for Brisbane going forward

It’s an important choice they don’t stuff up

Sydney was stuck with an awful himsbuah stadium for 30 years until Allianz got done
Then don't bid for the Olympics then.

Forget bmx riding, skate boarding, break dancing, even swimming. The Olympics is built around athletics and athletics requires an oval.

If you don't want to build a first class oval stadium then don't bid for the Olympics.

And congratulations on a first class effort on pretending you don't support afl. Bestest rugby league fan eva!!!

The main issue with the Victoria Park proposal is the price tag. $3.4b for a 55k ground seems way overs even accounting for inflation. Optus was $1.6b for a higher capacity for example.

In an ideal world Queensland could use the Olympics to get their stadium situation sorted for the next few decades. The Victoria Park option as it stands chews up the whole budget but still leaves Suncorp needing an upgrade and no smaller 2nd rectangular stadium.

A solution should be achievable to get all 3 sorted for $3.4b give or take some spare change.

It’s either going to be a renovated Gabba or a stadium at Victoria Park, with maybe some minor renovations of Suncorp. If we are going to be spending a lot of money on an oval stadium for the Olympics, as a local resident, I would rather it be a new one at Victoria Park and actually get a decent return on the investment.

Good points, Suncorp is not big enough, but the fact remains that the stadium money is for the Olympics, and the main event at the Olympics is a week of track and field.
In the past it was. Not sure it will be in the future by the time the Brisbane Olympics comes around. Look at what Paris did and what LA is planning.

Should have made Allianz 70k and knocked down Accor. Sensible stadium decisions seem to be an issue in Australia in some cities!
Ah yes, they should have knocked down a stadium that’s built around abouts the middle of Sydney and replace it with one on the extreme eastern side. That would make it so easy for the majority of fans to get to.

Do you just try to have shit takes or what?

When the Olympics is on, I watch around the clock coverage as much as I can. So whenever I’m not sleeping or at work.

The one thing I don’t watch, is the athletics. Only see the stadium for the opening and closing ceremonies. And Paris held the opening ceremony on a river & LA are hosting it in a rectangular stadium.

I agree with him tbh

Homebush would serve no useful purpose if they had spent 1 to 1.5 billion making Allianz 65 to 70k

With light rail links getting to Allianz is easy and not much different to homebush

Homebush is a lesson in what not to do for Olympics (I remember when the swans talked about moving games there) which Brisbane is about to replicate

It’s madness
