The fact of the matter is that Bruce doesn't meet any of WR's minimum standards to host RWC matches. We, the ACT, have known that's the case for well over a decade at this point, and Andrew Barr has been chief minister for all that time.

The only way to incentivise WR to turn a blind eye to the state of the stadium, and other infrastructure for that matter, was going to be to pay a huge fee. In other words basically guarantee that the event would be profitable. Barr wasn't willing to do that either because he and his government are wannabe social engineers trying to force Canberra to develop in their image, and their image for Canberra is for it to be a Melbourne lite, "progressive", wannabe Eurotrash city.

So no, it's not a slap in the face at all, just the inevitable consequences of the decisions of the electorate, and there's little that can be done to change it because the electorate is dominated by people who move here for work and Uni, and don't give a flying f**k about the impact on the local community and culture.

People like Andrew Barr don't see Canberra as their home, they see it as a guinea pig for their ideology, and if it ever goes wrong they can always return home. It's sad really, but very few people have the power to fight back (for lack of a better term), and those that do refuse to do so.

As much as I think Union is an inferior game, people will be willing to shell out to attend the rugby World Cup as it is a major event. Just as we watch all those ridiculous sports at the Olympics every 4 years, that we wouldn’t dream of watching any other time.

I don’t feel sorry for Canberrans because they continue to vote the same merkins in election after election.

One of the points in my post is that it isn't really the Canberrans that are giving them power. It's the somewhere over two thirds of the population that relocated here for work and school.

Actual Canberrans tend to be much more politically diverse than the ACT electorate is. In fact all the most based, as the kids would say, people I know are Canberrans who have experience working for government. Seeing how the sausage is actually made tends to have that effect on people.

As much as I think Union is an inferior game, people will be willing to shell out to attend the rugby World Cup as it is a major event. Just as we watch all those ridiculous sports at the Olympics every 4 years, that we wouldn’t dream of watching any other time.

58k watched the wallabies at Optus last year. As you said, it's a big event, it's not for Bruce Stadium.

Pfft, it's historical fact that the "other sports", Aussie Rules and Cricket in this case, have had a foothold in Canberra much longer than RL.

They're both highly popular sports here, pretty much indistinguishable in popularity to RL, and there's nothing wrong with them getting their fair share of government support.

It's not their fault that Barr has singled them out for special treatment, and the NRL would abuse that privilege as well if it was on offer. Truth be told, we're all well aware that the NRL does abuse government support in other jurisdictions.

That's historically inaccurate as well, and this issue goes far beyond RL.

Frankly, the fact that the Raiders have failed to the tie up the market despite being in it the longest of any professional team is an indictment on both the Raiders and the NRL. Canberra should be a dyed in the wool RL market by now, but that isn't even close to being the case, and that's largely the Raiders and NRL's own fault.

Hell, the stadium situation has only got as bad as it has in large part because of the Raiders being weak pushovers and NRL's decades long neglect of the ACT region.

It's actually pretty rich how RL, and RU to a lesser extent, whinge about the Labour government's treatment of their sports when they've treated Canberra like the redheaded stepchild since before the ACT had self-governance.
