I don’t buy that PVL was asleep at the wheel regarding the Olympics. He’s been discussing with them about adding rugby league as a sport. Maybe some of these discussions are ongoing that’s why nothing has been announced about lang park.

There’s a lot of people furious that there’s been no upgrade to Perry Park, which would be a good candidate for a 20k boutique rectangular stadium. And nothing announced for Suncorp..

The two venues put forward for Olympic soccer won’t be enough to host the full soccer tournament. I am thinking discussions are still ongoing about other venues, maybe it’s wishful thinking but perhaps there might be further announcements of upgrades. Cbus, Lang Park and an upgraded Perry park would round out the venues for Olympic soccer.

Getting 200m for Perry park and 300m for Suncorp upgrades would be the least rugby league and rectangular sports deserve for their top flight competitions.

At least a mid-life upgrade including 60k seats for Lang Park will tide us over for the next 15-20 years. I can’t see the government spending 4-5B for a brand new lang park anytime soon after the Olympics - it just won’t happen
Rectangular venues:

Sunshine Coast Stadium:

Events to be held: TBA
Existing stadium within the Kawana Sports Precinct will receive an upgrade from 1,046 to 10,680 permanent seats.

Barlow Park Stadium:

Events to be held: Football
The existing Barlow Park ground in Cairns will receive a major upgrade with a new 5,000-seater grandstand and will host football during the Games.

North Queensland Stadium:

Events to be held: Football
The existing North Queensland Stadium in Townsville will not require any upgrades to host football during the Games.

Suncorp as is. Presumably Gold Coast stadium as is.

That's 5 rectangular stadiums for football, RU7's, and RL Touch if it happens.

Just add the seating in the corners, new roof and upgrade food and beverage and corporate boxes. That should be 300-400m
Maybe you missed it but I explained already that corporate boxes and other faculties like ie food and beverage stands, members areas etc do get updated regularly and it’s more often than you think. In the case of F&B stands it’s not so much the aesthetics but it’s the services ie beer and soft drink lines, chiller and gas lines, power infrastructure etc.

Also went into detail about the corners and possibility of a new roof. The corners have provisions for capacity uplift but it means demolishing the internal awning as its support structure columns quite literally converge on the very same stadium corners that the extension provisions are located.

There’s no such provisions for a roof. The stadiums structure cannot support it.

Why should soccer get a purpose built stadium just bc their crowds are poor

Ballymore or kayo are the perfect size for the a league (average 7k) and super rugby sides (tba but under 8k)

Brisbane needs a 70k plus rectangular stadium to generate tourism

The new Olympic stadium will generate no additional tourism over the Gabba

Magic origin soceroos Matilda’s and Union tests would all generate at least 10k extra tourists for events plus they would be a prime candidate for a grand final

‘Envy of Australian sport’: What now for Suncorp Stadium?

Suncorp Stadium must continue to be improved by the state government to ensure it remains a drawcard for major events, Queensland Reds chief executive Dave Hanham says.
After the stadium missed out on funding for 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games upgrades, there are concerns other rectangular venues might poach events, including the NRL’s Magic Round that Brisbane has hosted since its 2019 launch.
Perth – favoured to gain a team in the NRL’s expansion plans – has previously hinted interest in securing the annual rugby league spectacle, as has the Gold Coast.
The success of the Queensland Reds has prompted hopes crowd figures would surge in Super Rugby.

Hanham said given the looming Rugby World Cups and the improved Super Rugby Pacific showings of Australia’s outfits – with all four teams sitting inside the top six – stadium innovation would need to rival technological advances in the US to accommodate the predicted surge of fans beyond the 20,072 who showed up for the Reds and Waratahs clash two weeks ago.

That included elite quality screens and Wi-Fi connectivity to provide live information, with hospitality and corporate experiences enhanced.
“My understanding is the government have a discretionary amount of money within the funding envelope to spend on Suncorp, and I think it would be good to understand that a little bit more,” Hanham said.
“Yes, it is a world-class venue, but it continually will need to be upgraded and renovated to maintain its status as a world-class venue.
“Suncorp is currently a world-class venue, but in eight years, will it still be? If we don’t spend money on that, then it won’t be.”

Harvey Lister, the head of ASM Global, which operates Suncorp Stadium and wants to operate Brisbane Arena, had wanted the $500 million set aside by the former Labor government to be spent improving accessibility.
“For the last 20 years we’ve had to shut down roads, and provide police and council officers to manage crowds, and cause disruption at considerable expense,” Lister said last year.
While Suncorp Stadium has gone from a potential showcase venue for opening and closing ceremonies, to only hosting football at the Games, Premier David Crisafulli insisted “we’re not going to let it wither on the vine ahead of 2032”.
“It will continue to be a world-class stadium, and we will invest in it.”

The confirmation of a 63,000-seat oval venue for Victoria Park supports the AFL’s expansion plans, and will likely see it compete with Suncorp Stadium for major events.

“I can only imagine the quality of that Vic Park stadium is going to be world-class. We want two world-class venues for our sports – AFL, NRL, rugby and football,” Hanham said.
“It’s got to be the pride of Queensland, two world-class stadiums that’ll be the envy of Australian sport.”
Ballymore intends to continue its push to becoming the home of Australian women’s rugby and Rugby 7s.

Ballymore, the state’s spiritual home of rugby, was originally slated to host hockey at the 2032 Games, only for an 11th hour decision to trigger the move to a redeveloped Gold Coast facility.
But Hanham had no fears for the future of Ballymore, adamant the Reds’ focus was to continue building it into a high-performance facility and the home of women’s rugby and rugby sevens beyond the Olympics.

That proposal included an allied health outlet, with Hanham emphasising such a development could be used by athletes from other Games codes.
“With a runway of a Rugby World Cup here in Australia for 2027, and for women in 2029 and the Olympics in 2032, our view and expectation is the legacy out of those major events needs to be a world-class training facility for rugby sevens,” Hanham said.
“We have that for our Wallaroos, and that will make Brisbane and Queensland the home for our national women’s programs. Come Olympics, we’re going to be a training venue, and we can support the athletes to prepare.
“Making sure we’ve got the best-quality facilities for our men and women, our Olympic athletes, is going to ensure we can be one of the best-performing countries in the globe.”

It’s absolutely bizarre that it’s been shunned given it’s far and away the most used venue in the state, 70% higher patronage than the Gabba. It’s as if they went out of their way to ignore it. Really odd.

Football will be Suncorp, Cbus, QCB, Cairns & Sunshine Coast. Sunshine Coast & Cairns are getting upgrades the rest remain as is with the current plan.

But yes, no reason they couldn’t have found a modest amount of money for the rectangular codes in Brisbane itself. They found $600m+ for an aquatic centre that will be revert back to 8k post-games as just one example not to mention the $4b for Victoria Park.

Getting Suncorp to 60k for $200-300m would be a far better ROI than half the stuff in the plan, it’s a games venue too and will probably have as many days of action as Victoria Park, athletics is only about 10 days anyway.

It’s not a surprise but it’s absolutely a shit result for NRL.

It's because the stadium was only one aspect to this. The real estate development is where the real money is and that is where the LNP donors reside.

Victoria Park is worth a fortune and it is being handed over.

If Suncorp is given some peanuts, I've just done some capacity calcs. If the level three north and south ends at Suncorp are increased by 6 rows (to match east and west), the capacity would increase to approx 55,000. I'd start there. It would reduce the concourse room a little bit, but they don't let people stand there anyway, and it would still be more spacious than the western level 3 concourse. Health and safety might say otherwise, but I'd certainly start there.

And that is embarrassing.

The Sydney Olympics were happy to share the games around the country, with matches in Brisbane, Sydney x 2 (of course), Melbourne, Adelaide, and Canberra.
In fact, the first event at the 2000 Olympics was at a sold out Hindmarsh stadium in Adelaide and the 2nd was at the MCG with 93 252 in attendance and both matches occurred before the opening ceremony was held.
The final at Stadium Australia had an attendance of 104 098.

Playing the world's biggest sport at the Olympics in these tin pot towns in Qld in front of the world is shameful.

Hindmarsh lol? Not a patch on QCB, CBus or even the new Sunshine Coast Stadium.

Can Olympic Soccer be played at ovals like the Gabba and MCG like it did in those days?

Won’t work. Literally what I’ve stated previously re: corners and provisions is the only capacity expansion course as per original design and specifications.

There’s fire engineering, access/egress and certification issues with what you’re proposing.

no reason it cant. I could see games at the Gabba to boost ticket availability for games featuring Aus, Italy or England.

Don't know.
But Qld is passing up massive amounts of ticket sales which are pocketed by the host city, by not sharing the love with bigger stadiums around the country.
As for Hindmarsh, I wasn't suggesting that as a venue. Just sayin'. It hosted two 18000 crowds and one 16000 crowd in 2000 of which all three crowds are bigger than what Sunshine Coast will be when redeveloped.

No need to get defensive. I'm just suggesting that with the popularity of football in this country nowadays (both men's and woman'), Qld are mad not to take advantage of that to try and recoup some of the costs of running these Olympics.

There is nothing in the Olympic hosting agreements that says football has to be in rectangular stadiums. Football was held in the Tokyo stadium which was oval in 2020. In 2008 in China two of the six stadiums used for football were ovals. In 2004 Greece five of the six football venues were ovals.

So nothing to stop them using Gabba as well for bigger games.
