The Game Future NRL Stadiums part II

Just proves that they are desperately trying to catch up to the NRL's progress.
They can add any team they like.
A 3rd in SA or WA will only bastardize the current teams.
The other's mentioned will only be another money suck and failure like the Suns and Giants.
Honestly, they are kidding themselves.
Also in recent years they’ve really struggled keeping up the quality of games with their expansion. Expanding to Tasmania isn’t like to produce any more juniors nor would any of those expansion teams. So you’re looking at a huge increase in the number of pro AFL players all coming from the same pool of players.

That’s one of the things NRL has going for it. PNG, NZ2, Perth all have the potential to bring in a lot of new talent to the game.

I can’t even think of a “stadium” the afl could use in Auckland. Eden Park is terrible for cricket

The next big step in nrl crowds will be when Sydney drops the suburban mentality and moves to right game, right time, right stadium approach. For that to happen nrl will need more say over fixtures, better stadium negotiations with nsw govt and for clubs to agree to playing some games at centralised stadiums with reciprocal membership deals. No reason Allianz doesn’t have two games every weekend with over 30k avg. likewise commbank a game every week With 25k avg.

What’s Perth doing about it’s shit suburban oval? It’ll be dragging down our crowd average from day dot.

Hopefully there’s a plan to get Wollongong upgraded to 25-30k. Desperately needed.

And probably Gold Coast and Cowboys when they entered the comp and they are rugby league heartland.
Gold Coast and Townsville don't represent Queensland's best rectangular venue. Perth's is WAs best rectangular venue in a state with so much money and a 2 million population, it's not a comparison.

Wellington obviously and won’t have an nrl team for ages

Eden park is ovalish ?
Unless rugby & cricket part ways (stadium-wise) in Auckland and cricket develops their own boutique oval, AFL would have to go to either Wellington (Sky Stadium) or Christchurch (Hagley Oval) for NZ games.

I doubt AFL would be crazy enough to put a team in NZ in my lifetime (I'm in my late 40s now), but games here to try and build a market could certainly be a thing.

I think once Tasmania are in & team 20 is decided, they'll be a renewed focus on home-away-from-home/secondary market games.

18 teams has screwed their depth, 20 will take some time to "fill out" (if it ever does) - so rather than expand to capitalize on other markets (Reasonable sized cities outside Melbourne/Sydney/Brisbane in Vic, NSW, Qld... Northern Territory.. Canberra if they miss out on team 20, MAYBE New Zealand..), AFL will be forced to use secondary markets for teams a lot more OR look to relocate a team if any of the Melbourne clubs seriously hits the wall)

Quite a contrast to NRL where we have 19 teams all planned, strong candidates for the 20th spot, and TONS or options beyond that - plus good RL junior stocks to draw on - with transferrable skills opening up opportunities for RU juniors here in NZ and across the Pacific.

Talk of an afl team in nz could force Pvl to pull his finger out and announce chch as team 20

I know wikipedia says there are 20,000 aussie rules players in NZ but it also says there are 8 clubs, one of which is composed of Mormon missionaries.
Despite the blather, AFL does not enter the consciousness of many Kiwis.
a team in NZ would be a bigger disaster than GWS. A team in Newcastle based in No. 1 Sportsground has a greater chance of success and that’s saying something.

That's the best their state can offer as a fit for purpose rectangular venue, pretty sad.
There are plans for an upgrade, albeit it is currently parked.

WA State Gov wanted some distance between formal Bears announcement (and their financial contributions to Rugby League in the state) and any announcement for a HBF Park upgrade minor, major or otherwise.

If I had to guess when, it’ll be closer to 2030ish or smidge past it. Consistent showing in numbers with WA fans attending home games will ultimately be the key to when the trigger is pulled on it.
