Over 50 percent of the Papua New Guinean kids play NRL and it seems to be the leading sport over there. Imagine having the titans homeground replicated for port moresby, in PNG :):)

With over 6 million people in PNG, it would be packed out to the rafters each time a team played there. All they need is a stadium and someone to inject 20 mill a year to keep it afloat. Bill Gates?? Where art thou??

We can all imagine...but it is NOT economically viable to have a PNG team. This topic has already been done

if PNG were a franchise and had a sugar daddy to keep it afloat till it took off well i reckon i would love to see them in the comp... but having said that they would have to go the hard way like the wa reds... through the lower grades before coming established in the NRL

Why don't people understand? The PNG team isn't just an issue of money! You could have Bill Gates funding the team, but how would they guarantee safety of participants? How could they justify this at the expense of education, health and infrastructure?

I vote No. I would LIKE for them to have a team. When I visited Port Moresby recently all the kids were wearing rip off jumpers bought from Brian Bell. They love it. I just can't see how it could happen.

If a private investor starts the franchise, how would it be at the expense of education, health and infrastructure??????. That's the government's job!!!!!!!!.

Security wouldn't be a problem, hire some security services or use the local police. It's not like the locals are gonna eat the players lolol.

Big time investors are into MAKING money Sandow. Pouring in 10-20-30 million into PNG is like putting 30 million on the Panthers to win the comp in 2009.....money lost.

I agree. I'd like them to have one...but I just can't see it happening.

Furthermore, what does it bring to the NRL? Not much really in terms of sponsorships TV rights etc. An NRL franchise is a prize asset...we need to be very selective about where we put them...and I'm an expansionist!

In another one of the "PNG in the NRL" threads an article said that Clive Palmer, owner of the GC A-League team and richest man in QLD, is interested in backing a PNG team.

Getting sponsors/backers isn't the problem (especially when the PNG PM says he wants the team), it's getting approved by the NRL and whether or not PNG can meet certain pro sports standards.

In the meantime I like the idea of salary cap concessions for clubs who go up to PNG and have training camps, recruit players, etc. That would do a lot of good for the game up there.

I'd like to see it happening. But like others have said, it's gonna be very difficult and it's an extremely tough ask to get a team by 2010.

more png players in the nrl should be the focus. they should not count towards the cap.

is that dr zeus from planet of the apes?

back on topic nrl clubs should go up there and hold camps and stuff and recruit players and bring them down for a trial or an incentive based contract and give em a run if they make it to nrl they should be cap exempt or partially cap exempt

Trying to be a smart ass aye Loudstrat, well its called rugby league mate, they love it up there. Quality players have come from PNG such as Marcus Bai, Stanley Gene, Adrian Lam etc. If you were running the NRL though, they'd probably be broke, because instead of coming up with solutions you try to focus on, deciphering a three letter abreviation.
