THEY will have to run heats in the morning with a field that size!!!!!!

There are some good horses in great form in that bunch - should be a very good race

From the Herald Sun:
Futurity fails Asian test

AUSTRALIA'S leading trainer John Hawkes has slammed the new format of Saturday's Futurity Stakes.

A small field of about 10 runners seems likely at Caulfield, with no international runners in a disappointing result for the first race of the Asian Mile Challenge.
The distance of the $750,000 Futurity was changed from 1400m to 1600m to link with the other races in the Challenge, the Dubai Duty Free in March, Champions Mile in Hong Kong in May and Yasuda Kinen in Japan in June.

"We are catering for overseas horses. Who cares about them? It's a mistake," Hawkes said. "You would get all the three-year-olds like God's Own if it was still 1400m. If you want overseas horses, you have to go to $1.5 million or $2 million."

Hawkes may have one runner, three-year-old Headturner, but will delay a decision until Thursday.

Racing Victoria racing operations manager Stephen Allanson said the Futurity would remain at 1600m.

"It was always going to be a difficult first year," he said.

"There are not a lot of international horses travelling this year. It is definitely the right decision to change from 1400m to 1600m. It wouldn't be a better race over 1400m."

There were nine nominations yesterday, adding to the original Asian Mile entries taken in January: Celtic Bloom, Devastating, Early Express, Great Is Great, Headturner, Live In Vain, Mr Murphy, Perfect Promise and Umber. Add Fields Of Omagh, Niconero and Valedictum and that is the likely field.

AUSTRALIAN Cup hopeful Casual Pass is out of the race and his autumn campaign in jeopardy.

Casual Pass has been dogged by a history of leg injuries, but this time his problem is a badly swollen neck, an allergic reaction to the joint lubricant Pentosan with which he has been treated regularly.

Trainer Mat Ellerton had planned to run Casual Pass in the Futurity Stakes and Saturday week's Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington.

Ellerton did not rule out a quick recovery, enabling Casual Pass to contest the Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) at Flemington on March 18.

VALEDICTUM, one of the top fancies for Saturday's group 1 Futurity Stakes at Caulfield, has a leg injury and will be sent to the paddock for a long spell.

Trainer Danny O'Brien said yesterday that while the injury to last spring's group 1 Emirates Stakes winner was not serious, connections had decided to look to the spring with the five-year-old.

"He has a little filling in one leg but while it's not serious, it's a good opportunity to give him a decent spell for 10 weeks," O'Brien said.

Valedictum was shaping as one of the horses to beat in the $700,000 Futurity (1600 metres) after two fine runs this campaign. He ran fifth in the unsuitable group 2 Carlyon Stakes (1200 metres) at Moonee Valley first-up and finished hard for fourth behind Perfect Promise and Lad Of The Manor in the group 1 Orr Stakes (1400 metres).

Great is Great is due to win... I'm a Headturner fan too. Just don't know wheter to back him to win the Australian Cup or the Guineas...

valedictum would have been a big chance

perfect promise must be a hope after last start

i backed great is great last on saturday but think this might be a touch too tough. will take a good look at the form later in the week

fields of omagh was a great run 1st up

and headturner will only get better over more suitable longer distances

Headturner is at 9's for the Australian Cup over 2000m... At WFA he'd be a show I reckon. Will they back up a week later after this race though?

if it was trained by gai waterhouse, i'd say it would definitely back up

but as it's trained by hawkes, i'd say it'll run this weekend and then tackle the triple crown (randwick guineas, canterbury guineas, ajc derby). seems extremely logical for a horse who was desperately unlucky in the vrc derby

Macs Numbers -
13,11,1 and 3

This is some race. I'm a Headturner fan and thought he'd be the best to come out of the 3 year old boys from last year. Handy run first up and happy to take him. Perfect Promise very hard to beat. Fields of Omagh always honest and Confectioner has plenty of ticks for this first up. Left out a few that could run well too, but can't have them all...
