THERE'S strong speculation in the national capital about NRL CEO David Gallop being sounded out for the top job at the Australian Sports Commission.

Gallop is deputy chairman of the ASC, but is being mentioned as a real possibility to replace departing CEO Matt Miller, who left after failing to lift the organisation's efficiency and profile. Miller had been in the job less than two years after a long career as a senior bureaucrat.

Gallop has many admirers in the federal Labor ranks. He's also well liked by Olympic boss John Coates.

League's imminent independent commission complicates matters for all concerned. This season is Gallop's 10th in charge of the NRL. Compared to his rivals in other codes, Gallop is not well paid and while it's a stretch to imagine him agreeing to live in Canberra and away from the surf ... the talk is genuine he will be sounded out.

OK. Massive fines and stripping premierships off Melbourne for cheating.

You preferred Moffo I take it?

Gallop has done a good job btw, most of the f**k ups in the game over recent years have been things he couldn't directly control

Gallop has done the best he could under the circumstances.

he has done a fair job, but he hasnt done enough for the sport to have a mortgage on the top job! its time for the sport to find someone to takr it to another level!

GALLOP HARD TO REPLACE

DAVID GALLOP is known to be unconcerned about rumours of his approaching demise as rugby league's top executive. He is aware a faction doesn't want him in the job but he has been assured he has a new four-year deal when the commission finally comes in. If Gallop is to be targeted, those firing the bullets had better get their chequebooks ready - they would need to find someone outstanding to replace him. Gallop has a tough, all-consuming job which bites into every part of his life.

He's served his purpose. His job was to stabilize the game from the SL war. Time to be proactive and move forward with a proactive leadership.

So the reason we are keeping Gallop is because he works hard and is cheap? Is this what we actually want?

How about we get a CEO who is more expensive and can actually move the game forward without any baggage.

The new IC cannot have any connection with the past apparently, but we are keeping the CEO? That is absurd beyond belief.

You all know the saying about paying peanuts.

Who says he is cheap ffs? El Diablo's link was talking about a payout, not a wage.

From the OP:

Remember the employment process Gallop had to go through to get teh job:
Rupert - "Dave, I know you have zero sports management or ANY management experience - but, you're a lawyer and we need someone to run this stupid asset and protect our interests".
Gallop: "Sure - I'll do it".

Independent Commission? WAFJ!

Gallop has done a tremendous job. Moffot and Whittaker were the one's who in my opinion, took huge steps backwards, however they did have some genuine good idea's though most never eventuated. Gallop has had to handle issue after issue, controversy after controversy. Though some times the outcome doesn't seem fair or even make that much sense, he has tried his heart out, all from being stuck in between a rock and a hard place with his employers NEWS LTD at times seeming to have conflict of interest with the company he runs, NRL.
