Galvin v the Tigers

Surprised this isn't already being discussed there. If it is, and I've just missed it somehow, feel free to fold this into that thread.

I'm a little lost. What has Galvin done that countless others haven't? He doesn't want to play for the Tigers and has indicated that he'll be testing the market. What's the big deal? Why is he being singled out?

Didn't Luai do the same thing?

Didn't Api do the same thing?

I get that it's disappointing for Tigers fans, of course. But why is everyone piling on the kid?

I understand the hate for Moses and there's definitely a strong case for PVL etc to act to break up the power that player managers seem to have. But yeah, I just don't get what's so different about this case and say, Utoikamanu, or countless others.

Mate if anyone here believes he doesnt have a club lined up to go to immediately (whilst still under contract) then I have these rocks that keep tigers away Id like to sell you.

To then publicly use the excuse that its because Benji cant coach (which he likely cant) when its very obviously a manager play to get his client to a preferred club and more money.

To compare to Luai and Api is comparing apples and oranges. Luai openly wanted to stay at Penrith and was visably upset when he announced he was leaving, he then put in for the rest of year and was arguably the teams best player in a Premiership year.

Api was told by his last two clubs he either wouldnt be offered a contract or wouldnt be first choice 9.

FWIW I do think that the Tigers players are coming across as childish, particularly Turuva. I would have played Galvin until it became obvious that he wasnt putting in or the club was out of finals contention.

I think its a bit classless and childish of his teammates to bully him on social media.

No issue with them telling the coach they don’t want to play with him. Although I feel it sets a bad precedent If players can do that. Atleast its honest and not public. But its a step too far when they’re publicly attacking him. He’s still only just a kid.

He might not have handled the situation as best as he could. But what’s wrong with a teenager wanting to be coached by a different coach? Players do that all the time. Or to chase big money? Although I believe money isn’t his motivator because he turned down a $6m contract at Tigers and I don’t see another club offering more than that. But even if it was sbout money. Who cares? Luai chased money. Turuva went for money. If you can only do that after a premiership he would never be able to leave Tigers.

But honestly the only thing I disagree with is teammates bullying him online. Because it encourages the masses to do the same. Give him the cold shoulder around the club.

edit
No issue with fans making their own decision to hate him either. Just the players publicly bullying a work colleague which influences the public to pile on.

I think Turuva and others slagging him off on socials is a bridge too far. Bit I also think ever since his debut he's come across as a money grubbing egomaniac, and this smacks of that as much as anything.

Yep everything was all alright & i had no problem with any of the tigers stance.

Until the Turuva post which if its not close to crossing the line its over the line..

If he had the photo of the wests tigers with the song i would have probably copped it.

But to take a photo of Galvin's individual locker and then mock him is an awful look and lacks class. Especially when he is just 19 years old.

Basically giving Issac Moses all the ammo he needs to request a release on workplace bullying claims.

Interesting perspective on this from Ivan Cleary of all people -

Given Ivans job you could say there is a bit of conflicting interest in his comments. He is right though.

I'm sure we all remember Ash Taylor. We will never know if his career takes a different path if he had stayed at the Broncos on a sensible contract for a few more years, but even if he was still a bust the pressure and scrutiny would have been an easier pill to swallow.

Yeah, I get the Tigers fans have a prerogative to be upset. I'm more reacting to the media pile on (which I think is more fuelled by dislike for Moses) and especially Luai and Turuva on social media.

All comparisons break down at some point. But Luai left Penrith because they couldn't offer him the money that he wanted (and, I think, deserves)

He seems(ed) to have the right to call the ball anytime and everyone defer to him, which is fine in theory, but then he seems to call it way too much and it's ruining the ability of Luai and Api to control games, and I think if they push back and stop deferring to him then the egos become a thing. I reckon you'll be a better team for dropping him.

As I understand it Turuva's post wasn't meant for public consumption. It's bad and stupid and mean but not intended to be as malicious as it's turned out.

Luai had already won 3 premierships when he signed for more money because the Panthers couldn't pay him that much.

Not after 8 games.

And that's what turns everybody off. He's done nothing and already wants to be paid like he the best in the game while trying to muscle his way out of the club.

People, and journos especially, are forgetting that in 2028 the NRL (hopefully) gets a bumper tv deal. The salary cap is likely to go up significantly and the stars on $1.2mill at moment could be heading to $2mill a year. If I was a gun young halfback being touted as the best up and comer I wouldn't be signing a long term contract unless it had some guaranteed uplift clauses in it.

On this kid, he's entitled to decide where he works. Clubs cut players quickly when they dont value them anymore, he has every right to look for a different club when his contract is up.

Listening to Tallis prattle on all week about it given his history of loyalty to a club was one of the most hypocritical things Ive heard.

When did Galvin publicly say Benji can't coach? Honest question, I haven't seen it. I've only seen media reports.

The one I have the issue with is Turuva. What a hypocritical thing to say, to go on about money, when Turuva has literally just moved to the Tigers for more money. Otherwise, wouldn't he be at Penrith? There's no way the Panthers wouldn't want to have kept him, but the Tigers paid him more, so he went.

Even Luai, he's saying team first...then why didn't he accept a pay cut at Penrith? I don't expect him to, incidentally. But I do expect that he shouldn't criticise a 19 year old to want to leave, for what is either more money, or the same money plus better premiership prospects.

Some of this BS in the media makes it seem like the Tigers developed and put their life savings into Galvin, which is horse crap. He was an Eels junior, and is on a reported $250k.

To me, a lot of this is because of Isaac Moses. But that doesn't excuse the public rubbish that Turuva and Luai put up, and Fonua Pole if you want to count some like he made on a critical post. That is unprofessional crap from all three. This is a business.

It is a bit silly to play it out on social media in general but yeah Turuvas post was the dumbest. Most players leave clubs for more money, including himself
