Eels and Panthers ready to face off

THE NRL roadshow will roll into Griffith later today, bringing with it some of the most recognisable players in the code as the Penrith Panthers and Parramatta Eels square off in a crucial pre-season clash.

The game tomorrow is the start of both club’s 2009 premiership campaign, with the Eels and the Panthers using the occasion to blood a number of exciting young players.
On the eve of their arrival, Eels coach Daniel Anderson named a strong side for the battle with their traditional western Sydney rivals, with the inclusion of Krisnan Inu, Kris Keating, Joe Galuvao, Todd Lowrie and Brendan Oake in the run on side.

Anderson said the trip to Griffith would serve as a fact-finding mission for himself, given he still knows very little about the squad, after coaching St Helens in the English Super League since 2006.

“I have got eyes on the side to see how they’re travelling, I understand other people will be looking as well but I really don’t know a lot about these players,” Anderson said.

“Especially their competitive and their match-day abilities, so it’s a real eye-opener for me as well, I see it as a pretty important trip for all those reasons.”
Speaking to The Area News after training on Wednesday, Anderson confirmed Nathan Cayless would not play on Saturday night due to an arm infection.

“He had a boil and a blood infection, but Nathan will still be coming to Griffith,” Anderson said.

“He’s not up to playing, he’s had a calf strain as well, so he’s had a really wretched, shocking January.”

Anderson will be under a lot of scrutiny from this weekend onwards from the Parramatta faithful, with many hoping he will finally break their premiership drought.
But the man himself said he doesn’t feel the added pressure, since taking over the reins from Michael Hagen, saying he is looking forward to the challenges of the season ahead.

“I don’t feel any undue pressure, there is pressure in being an NRL coach, but I’m not fazed by it, I’m very excited to turn up to work.

Eel be coming home in the blue and gold

IF YOU hear one section of Parramatta fans cheering louder than normal tomorrow, chances are you have found the Jeff Robson fan club.

Barellan-born Robson will make a homecoming of sorts tomorrow as he leads the Eels around against the Penrith Panthers at Exies No. 1
The 26-year-old left home in 2000 to make it in the big time, and his first home was in the blue and gold of the Eels.
Now, after a stint for the Manly Sea Eagles, Jobson returns to Parramatta Stadium with the starting number seven jersey in his sights.

“It’s a fair bit different from the last time I was here, Daniel Anderson has got his own style of coaching, he was actually under Brian Smith when I first came to Parramatta so there is some sense of similarity,” Robson said.

“But it should be good to get back and playing in front of family and friends because a lot of them probably haven’t seen me play in a fair few years.

“I know a lot of people from Leeton and in Griffith and I still have family in Griffith and Barellan, they’re really keen to come and watch me.”

After finding a big career roadblock in the form of Matt Orford at Manly, Robson said he realises he still faces significant competition from former NSW halfback Brett Finch.

“I came here (Parramatta) for a bit of a change and more opportunities to have a crack at first grade,” he said.

“It was hard at Manly, because he’s (Orford) like the captain of the club and a great player but it’s not going to be easy here because we still have Brett Finch.
“But the plan is to wait and be patient and play good footy.”

The boys want to catch up with Snoopy Collins, Penrith asst coach. He has allowed the local coaching staff to sit in on the Penrith boys warm up, and pre match instructions. Should be interesting.
Bit hard to know what to wear...Shorts and thongs or jeans? Might hafta take a change of clothing!!! Just in case..

No, he'll spend 5 minutes telling you about the first quarter, and the rest of the game telling you about the 60's.
