Gaol kick let us down again

Maybe, maybe not.
I know he isn't a top grade kicker, but at the moment I don't see many other options.

Bird won't be reliable, Merritt is injured, I haven't ever seen Hilder kick.
Apart from them guys, who else is there?

Noddy seems good for 60-70% each week. That is enough to get us over the line if we play well.

Sorry Richo that is wrong.
That percentage is good, only if the other kicker is the same.
We need to have a kicker better than 80%. Much better. We need the advantage & confidence that brings along to lay the platform.
There were 8 points in penalties our there last night for us that we did not take.

i say give someone else a go raper, noddy aint no first-class goalkicker and he never will be, plus without him taking the kicking duties he'll be more focused on attacking side of the game and all the backline movements + captaining the side!! :p

Seriously, Noddy didn't cost us the game.

I agree. It was our defence close to our line that cost us. Two weeks in a row we concede soft tries at the death.

I blame McGoldrick for Tonga's try.

But, that said, I was proud of the way the boys played on Saturday. 100% on the previous week and, if we can play like that week in week out, we can make the eight.

Sat nights game was not the first time Noddy has missed a kick from in front.
Those kicks MUST be converted into points!
Because there will be games when a goal kick will be the difference between a win and a loss.

He missed two goals. We lost by 4. Had he got one of those goals, we may not have scored the Bird try so it's hard to say.

Sure, Noddy missed two goals, but one of them was from the bloody sideline. Give the guy a break!!

I think what preston kicks is irrelevant to the Sharks cause.
When the Sharks play with the same confidence & developed combinations that the Panthers have, that percentage may be close to acceptable. You know that team are going to get a shyte load of tries.
That irrelevant bit of evidence is way outside his median & should be considered as an extreme value.
With Noddy, it is right on his average.
To say different is just ridiculous. With Noddy kicking, it is costing us games & valuable rungs on the ladder.
it is imperative that it is fixed.

It's almst as if Noddy won't give it up, maybe he is suffering from Johns envy still.

I think Noddy might be the only one with enough confidence to kick

I'd be really surprised if he's specifically lobbied to be given the kicking duties, I dont think that's his style at all

The point I was trying to make with Preston, is that it has been stated as fact elsewhere that you "must" have a kicker who kicks at over 80% if you are to be any chance of winning the comp.

To dispel that, here's a list of kicking percentages from the premiers for the last 10 years or so:-

2003 Campbell 72% Girdler 66%

2002 Fitzgibbon 76%

2001 Johns 82%

2000 Devere 73%

1999 Geyer 61%

1998 Lockyer 68%

1997 Lockyer 64%

1997 Johns 74%

1996 Ridge 81%

1995 Halligan 71%

That dispels nothing.
As the reply you got when you requested this info on the other forum from Frenzy.
The Teams that won the premiership had high scoring teams. Brisbane put 6 tries on us in the 97 GF.
The Sharks & other teams that turn their fortunes around, need to go way past the average in all areas.
The Sharks as a bottom team need to score more tries & they need to have a better goal kicking percentage.
& your reference in the other forum that people are saying this because they want to pick on BK is ridiculous.
BK is the most likely to throw the match winning pass to win the tight the games possibly even a GF.
Out of all kickers in the competition, he is also the most likely to miss a goal from right in front, to lose a game.

If one was silly to look at those figures alone, you could also say that over the last 5 years 75% is the cut off. Preston & Girds shared duties last year so their averages would have been affected by consistency.

You're right about the needing to score more points Reefy.
I'm just amazed that certain sections seem to concentrate on the supposed need for a better kicker, when it is try scoring which has let us down in the past.

We seem to have a better defence than last year, so should concede less points. And I think the signs from Saturday are that we look a little sharper in attack, so will hopefully score more.

I'm not denying I'd like a better kicker. I just don't see it as the be-all and end-all to our problems. And I don't like reading threads like this, when BK played a blinder the other night, both in attack and defence.
To me it is just a thinly-veiled swipe at him, for the sake of having a swipe at him
