Gasnier expelled from NSW team for obscene call

20 May 2004

Mark Gasnier has been expelled from the NSW State of Origin rugby league team after it was found he'd made an obscene phone call.

Centre Gasnier, the nephew of league legend Reg Gasnier, made the early morning call yesterday to a 27-year-old Sydney woman.

NSW Rugby league chairman Geoff Carr said Gasnier had been dismissed from the team for the opening match of the series against Queensland in Sydney next Wednesday.

Carr said Gasnier had been identified as the caller after the team management received a recording of the call from the woman.

He had then admitted making the call.

The woman had complained to the Sydney Roosters of receiving a message from a player's phone at 3.41am yesterday saying, in part, "(Woman's name), where the f... are you? There's four toey humans in the cab...and you're in bed. F... me - fire up".

It was reported today the 3.41am call had come from NSW winger Anthony Minichiello's mobile phone.

He told team management the phone had been lost or stolen that night and he had not realised it was missing until later that day.

Carr said Gasnier had been told to return to the Dragons for club duties and doubted he would be selected later in the Origin series.

"It is going to be difficult for him to get back," Carr said.

Carr said the latest incident left NSW officials worried about letting players out of their sight.

"I don't know whether we can let them out of their rooms," Carr said.

Loser of the week - Mark Gasnier.

But who's dumber?? Mark Gasnier or Chris Walker??

It's another, totally separate state of origin in itself!

You'd think after everything that has happened this year that the SOO camp would be alcohol free??

It has proved one thing though, Gasnier has no brain cells up top.

It was stolen cause Gasnier was game enough to stupidly think he could get away with it .
All 4 should have been dumped.
Gasnier=scapegoat for another 3.

With all thats been going wrong lately, State Of Origin could have been something to put the game back in the papers for the right reasons, but in the space of 2 weeks Chris Walker and Mark Gasnier have destroyed it.

Its only a matter of time before alcohol gets banned during the season and will be idiots like these 2 (and countless others) that have ruined it for the rest.

he could have copped a fine or something like that sounds to me the top brass have over reacted a tad.

A bit harsh? as I said in another thread if it was your daughter who'd been subjected to that sort of call from a drunken meathead would you think it was ok, I know I don't, I'd be having him charged for harrassment at the very least.

I think Misty may have read the article I did with the message that wasn't too bad.

It didn't have anything in it about their "fat c**ks" or their "c**ks spurting", or even the merkin word. I read it yesterday though so the full story probably wasn't out in the open by then.

This is what was said.

"[Woman's name], where the f*** are you?" the voice said.

"There's four toey humans in the cab - it's 20 to four. Our c**** are fat and f****** ready to spurt sauce and you're in bed. F*** me - fire up, you sad c***."

I have to be honest here and say even the toned downed version is not acceptable, these blokes have got to get it in their heads that being a high profile person doesn't put them above the laws of decencey, I've been known to smack people around the head for saying the F word around my family, Gasnier and anyone else who was involved should be made to sit out a few games for once again bringing the game down to gutter level, after all the crap that's gone on this year you have to wonder what sort of mentality drives these idiots.

Until I read this full version, I was thinking it was another case of something negative, unacceptable even, but still being blown out of proportion by the media. But if Kaz is quoting the actual message something must be done. And now to read there are more complaints on the way is very disheartening.

But surely, League players are not the only men(?) to behave this badly. I have seen / heard it all around me among young men. And young women. (and not just the young). I cannot but feel this is symptomatic of a society degenerating as we speak. Language like that allegedly used is broadcast at us daily on television, radio, music, and movies. We have come to accept less than moral behaviour in society and turn our heads. While we accept swearing, immoral and amoral behaviour in society generally, in our entertainment, how can we object to it just because those involved are well known? Yes, some think they (the players) should be role models, but for what? A society who watches things on television like "Temptation Island" and "Big Brother Uncut"? Who go to movies depicting violence, and gratuitous / casual sex? Who listen to recording artists as well known for their depravity as for their musical talent?

I know I got on the bandwagon here. And I know not all people in society accept this kind of behaviour. But somewhere along the way, Rugby League players began to be the whipping boys for so many codes of behaviour we have begun to accept in society on a daily basis. Maybe this is the signal for us all to look inside our own lives and make changes as well. The NRL isn't the only responsible party involved.

I can tell you this, I have never used that language in front of my family, and they have not used it in front of me, now I don't know if that makes me some sort of Dinosaur, but that's how it is in our house, and was so in my mothers house. You are correct in your observations though miladi, society is on the down hill track in many ways, but that's a whole different story. This is about a bloke phoning somebody he's never met, and insulting them with that type of language then using drunkeness as an excuse, there is no excuse that's acceptable.
