Gasnier wants Dragons not to re sign Dugan

Mark Gasnier has reported in the Telegraph that the Dragons should make the hard call and let Duges go.
He says the Dragons should heavily invest in spine a la Storm and maybe go hard for Tedesco or either develop our up and comers for FB and reinvest Duges's fee elsewhere.
Was brutal but honest comment.

My gut feeling is that Duges could be signed by the Broncos
Shift Boyd to 5/8 Milford HB with Duges at FB for 500-600k plus TPA's.
Duges's hit up style is right up Bennett's alley!

Agree with the Gaz - Duges is a great player in a struggling team but given the squads priorities...can't shell much beyond 550-600 on Duges and he and his management believe he is worth double that.

I tend to agree with Gaz if Duges is demanding 1 mil a season... However if he's prepared to take a pay-cut to play centre then i'm happy to have him stay.
However I don't necessarily agree with signing Tedesco, as weird as it feels saying that. We have young Dufty coming through, I'd hate to go spending 1mil+ a season on Tedesco, only to see Dufty move on to another club for 1/8th of that money and absolutely kill it.

If Dugan was out for the season we
could use Dufty, Mann, Field, Herbert, Dodd or Nightingale and we would not be any worse off plus they are more all round players. I would be happy if Dugan went this year. We should have
spent Dugan's money to retain Brett Morris as he is twice the player.

Mark Gasnier: Why Dragons should look at dumping star Josh Dugan

ST GEORGE Illawarra legend Mark Gasnier says the Dragons should consider dumping star fullback Josh Dugan and replacing him with a “value for money” player.

Dugan is off-contract this year and could command as much as $1 million-a-season beyond 2017 thanks to the NRL’s increased salary cap.

His contract this year is believed to be worth around $750,000 and he’s yet to commit beyond the coming season.

But with the Red V signing Ben Hunt on a $6 million five-year deal from 2018, and 22 players off contract this year, the Dragons’ recruitment think tank has a daunting puzzle to piece together in the coming months.

One of the 22 players coming off contract is Test winger Jason Nightingale, who foxsports.com.au understands is in advanced talks to extend his contract by one or two years.

Gasnier says letting Dugan go could free up a chunk of money and help the club bolster other positions.

Josh Dugan of the Dragons is tackled by Semi Radradra.

“Josh Dugan, if I’m being brutally honest, I think the Dragons should basically look at every position on its merits,” Gasnier told foxsports.com.au.

“If Josh Dugan wants X amount, and potentially there’s other options at a less amount that you think are going to be good value with Ben Hunt there, that’s the whole idea of recruitment.

“You’ve got to get value for money, you really do.”

St George Illawarra have made the finals just once since Dugan joined the club in 2013. In that time, he’s alternated between centre and fullback but last year made the permanent switch to the No.1 jumper.

Dugan is considered one of the best running fullbacks in the NRL and can be damaging with ball in hand, but his ball-playing deficiencies have been a topic for conversation over the past two seasons in particular.

He’s also developed a reputation for being injury-prone - last season he played 17 of a possible 24 club games. He also had neck surgery prior to the 2016 season.

Dugan is one of at least seven fullbacks off contract this year, alongside the likes of James Tedesco, Darius Boyd, and Valentine Holmes.

But Gasnier believes the Dragons could be well served by looking inside the club rather than going to market for their next No.1.

“I believe Jai Field could develop into a real fullback ... would he be ready next year? Probably not,” Gasnier said.

“They’ve got (Matt) Dufty there, see how he develops throughout the year.”

Alternatively, Gasnier says his former club could go all out and spend big money on one of the off-contract fullbacks yet to be signed beyond 2017.

Tedesco is nearly three years younger than Dugan and while he could command as much money as the Dragons’ Kangaroos star, Gasnier believes he could be better value long-term.

“Tedesco, potentially if you’ve gone hard at Ben Hunt, do you go the Melbourne theory and potentially put a big chunk of your salary cap into three or four players in those key positions?” Gasnier hypothesised.

Josh Dugan of Australia scores during the Four Nations.

Dugan spoke to
foxsports.com.au only two months ago about his future in rugby league and said he hopes to remain in Wollongong for at least one more contract.

“I want to stay at the Dragons and hopefully that’s what happens,” Dugan said.

“I feel like they gave me a second chance and that’s why I extended for so long in the first place.”

Dugan has also floated the idea of playing rugby overseas, and even testing the waters in American football at some stage.

Of the 22 players off contract, Gasnier says the club should prioritise re-signing young forward Jack de Belin and fellow big-man Russell Packer, who will join backrowers Tyson Frizell and Joel Thompson as the base of the Red V’s 2018 pack.

He says the club must then decide whether to put faith in hooker Cameron McInnes or go to market for a new No.9 to bolster the spine alongside new halfback Hunt.

Dragons off-contract: Euan Aitken, Jack de Belin, Levi Dodd, Josh Dugan, Kalifa Faifai Loa, Yaw Kiti Glymin, Siliva Havili, Jacob Hind, Drew Hutchison, Tim Lafai, Chris Lewis, Kurt Mann, Jake Marketo, Mose Masoe, Will Matthews, Tyrone McCarthy, Josh McCrone, Taane Milne, Jason Nightingale, Shaun Nona, Russell Packer, Gareth Widdop.

It's hard to make a decision right now however, if I had to do so, I would let Dugan go. The Dragons should make a decision only after they have had time to see how Dufty goes at NRL level.

If Dufty goes well and Dugan and Widdop move on at the end of this season, there should be a good bucket of salary cap for our new coach to improve our roaster.

Is this the same Mark Gasnier who took a back ended contract which sucked up a lot of spare salary cap, forced the club to get rid of players like Neville Costigan and Jeremy Smith, and then promptly retired?

I'm sorry, great player, but I'm not interested in his opinion with regard to how best to manage the salary cap.

Which ever way you look at it, it remains a tough decision, It wouldn't surprise me if the Donkeys make a decent offer to Dugan just for the fact we paid overs for Hunt.

If we were to offer a fullback a mil per season, I agree with Gaz, I would offer it to Tedesco. Duges I fear if the paper talk is true, is pricing himself out of the market. His retention if it was for similar dollars he is on now, I also fear may cripple us for a non-creative type player.

Agree totally with this comment. He came back won a premiership with us and then f**ked off. There were other players i'm sure that had to look elsewhere due to his signing.

Yes , that was the beginning of our salary cap troubles . With both Jeremy Smith and Neville Costigan gone the next year , so went a big part of the Dragons ' brick wall ' defence .

Iam not saying that Mark Gasneir was not an excellent player , but more so how other players who had been instrumental in the clubs rise to the very top of the competition, were displaced by his signing .

And then to say that he had already made his decision to leave earlier in 2011 , was just rubbing salt into the wound.

Of course the $64,000 question that some of you may be asking yourselves , were the Dragons capable of winning the 2010 premiership without Mark Gasneir , imo yes . As they had already been moulded into a great team by Bennett .

Sign Dugan up for a million dollar season with a "Steve Matai" clause in his contract. ( this is a true clause in some player contracts)

Every time Dugan falls to the ground with a suspicious injure the club will deduct $10,000.00 from his salary.
By the end of the season Dugan will be playing for zero salary. Win win !!!

More like 700k to 750.
From what i have been told.
Have you heard anything different.
If this is so i can live with it.
A current rep player with plenty of experience, leadership qualities & wants to stay with the club.
Some say he has not done much because the club has only made the finals once in his time.I would put most of the blame on the useless coaches, selections & attacking structures he has had to play under.
Would love to see him running off Hunt with a decent coach in charge.
