Geelong is on track to become a debt-free premiership-winning club, president Frank Costa said last night.
Addressing the club’s annual general meeting, Costa said the groundwork was almost complete to put the Cats on the way to ultimate success.
“When we came together three years ago, our goal was to make Geelong a debt-free premiership winner,” he said.
“We knew it would take more than three years and we believe at the end of a second term we will be much closer to that ambition. In fact, we might already have achieved it.
“Certainly the debt, while it is still a major issue for us, is considerably reduced.”
Last night’s meeting heard the club had re-appointed its board for another three years, confirmed a profit of AUD$63,000 and praised the recruiting staff’s initiative in signing a number of potential stars.
Costa said the “years ahead will be successful for our club”, and that the re-appointment of the board was crucial in seeing Geelong become a debt-free club.
Costa also said supporters could look forward to Geelong’s on-field performance improving over the next few years.
“We have recruited well and without doubt the young players will give this club the sort of bright future we’ve all been hoping and working for,” he said.
“These are exciting times for Geelong. We are making great progress. We are coming back.”
He urged Geelong fans to continue their support of the club to help the Cats reach their ultimate goal of AFL premiers.
“Our membership slogan this year is ‘Fighting On’. And everyone at the club, including the directors, is certainly working on,” he said.
“I am going to ask you to be patient with the new boys and the not so new ones,” Costa said of the club’s players.
“We have in Mark Thompson a great teacher. In time, he will turn these players into the champions we require to make our club the debt-free premiers.”
Costa said that while he understood 2001 had been a difficult year for Geelong supporters, he called on them to remember the financial progress that had been made in the last three years, and he said the quality of the team’s young players would help bring on-field success.

Its good to see the purrers getting on top of it and I wish them well. It won't be easy going, however, and they already appeal as wooden spoon favourite for 2002 (they simply lack strength & depth of playing list). They showed good sense in signing-up Mark Thompson though... The guy has class and character and you get the impression that if Geelong does fall flat next year it won't be for want of his trying.

I too hope the Cats can stick with it...but its going to be hard for all the Vic. teams to survive further down the track...no matter what the afl is tell the clubs now...its just a blanket screen plan they have for only 6 teams to play out of Vic.

More than anything I just wish some of these afl supporter in Melb. would stopliving in their own little worlds and have a look-see about them and come to terms with the fact that there are other footy codes that are just as good as the afl.

Cheers
