Price put on Saab release ahead of de Belin court date

The Dragons' release of promising winger Jason Saab to a rival club will require a player swap or transfer fee being paid as Jack de Belin prepares for his latest appearance in court.

De Belin will appear in Wollongong Local Court on Friday where a ruling on legal argument in his criminal case is expected.

Friday's proceedings will determine if and when a trial date is scheduled, with de Belin's playing future dictated accordingly.

The Dragons face serious competition from the Warriors for his services should he be able to play in 2021.

His uncertain future holds significant influence over St George Illawarra's roster as the club looks to appoint Paul McGregor's long-term successor in the next month.

Meanwhile, Saab's early exit from the last two years of his Dragons deal is contingent on the club not being left empty-handed by his departure.

Saab has been pushing for a release on compassionate grounds for much of 2020.

The 19-year-old has struggled with a three-hour daily commute to Wollongong for training and family circumstances that prevent him moving closer to the club's headquarters.

Dragons officials have met with Saab's management multiple times throughout the year but have been unable to resolve the impasse.

Saab has fielded interest from several Sydney rivals including Wests Tigers and Manly over the course of 2020, but the Dragons preference is for a player swap to hasten his release.

"It's worth noting that contrary to media reports Jason Saab has not been granted a release at the end of the season," CEO Ryan Webb wrote in an update to Dragons members on Thursday.

"Although we will consider allowing him to depart on compassionate grounds if we were to receive a commensurate compensation in the form of a player and/or cash consideration."

NRL.com understands that the Dragons are not necessarily chasing a like-for-like replacement for Saab, with reinforcements on the edges and in their middle forwards stocks also a roster priority.

Saab has stressed that welfare concerns are driving his push for a release despite struggling for game time, with the 199-centimetre winger behind Mikaele Ravalawa and Jordan Pereira in the club's pecking order.

Utility Tristan Sailor faces a similar predicament and has been unable to get a run under interim coach Dean Young after playing the final three games of McGregor's tenure.

The 22-year-old son of former dual-international Wendell Sailor is yet to begin contract talks with the Dragons and may well have to move on to see regular first grade at the end of 2020.

Queensland Origin prop Christian Welch remains a front-row target with a three-year deal reportedly tabled, while Melbourne are also bidding to hang onto him with a two or three-year contract of their own.

Webb's message to members confirmed the key elements underpinning the Dragons coaching recruitment process, with an emphasis on "strong discipline", the "ability to develop young players", being "defensively minded" and coming "from a culture of success".

In the same memo, Webb referenced the imminent re-signing of "our brightest young talent in the coming weeks."

NRL.com understands the Dragons are poised to lock in several up and coming SG Ball players, having earlier this week elevated twins Max and Matt Feagai to next year's top 30 squad and re-signed the pair until the end of 2022.

How could Saab even think about an offer from Manly. Travel time is the issue apparently. If that’s the case he should only be allowed to Join the Panthers, Tigers or Eels.
If the Panthers we will happily swap for either Naden or To’o.
If the Eels lets through a good contract at Nathan Brown especially if we loose JDB.
If Tigers we will take the cash as they are sh!t.

If I thought he was going to turn out to be another Daniel Tupou whom I rate very very highly then I would suggest we went all out to keep him

Well, the Tigers could give us Nofoaluma. He goes alright.

Re- Saab - I’m struggling to see where the offers from other clubs are? He has shown little effort whilst wanting to go elsewhere? If travel is such a drama then move to the Gong and get some independence and maturity. He has almost half the year to hang with his family, who are just 90 minutes up the freeway!!

Noone can offer anything until Nov 1 as he'scstill under contract untill the end of 2021. However, if we grant him a release, thats another story.

Saab is no loss as he makes little impact and has no thrust or ball skills. I would not even rate him in our top six wingers as he is uncoordinated. He has size but no ability or application.
Saab is at the beginning of his first-grade career and I expect he will end up being one of the better wingers in the NRL over the medium term. However, if he does not want to stay then go he must.

I think our CEO is on the right track, contracts should not only apply to one side (the Club) and so, players should be made to think twice before spitting the dummy.

With this CEO, things are certainly looking up at the Dragons.

It's funny, Nofoaluma seems to get overlooked by most. Hell, he doesn't even make posm's daily teams.

But he's currently second for tries (13) and line breaks and first for tackle breaks. He's one of the best wingers in the comp.
Possm has dropped the ball there big time. Highly underrated Nofa

We have Pereira and two great young juniors who will all fight for the left-wing position and then Ravalawa and Feagai who will fight for the right wing position. Williame and the other Feagai are contenders for the left-centre position and Lomax has the right-centre position sown up.

We have plenty of halves coming through with Norman and Hunter under contract long term.

So it is really 2 forwards and a fullback we need; not a winger or a centre.

A lot of people would say we already have a fullback.

2. Nofoaluma

I've said it before, Dufty is a great attacking player from fullback and passes the ball well to supporting players. But these days, a fullback needs to return the ball with vigor and confidence and he also needs to perform well in the jlast line of defense.

At five-eighth, Dufty would be protected by one of our edge-forwards in defense and so would not be so vulnerable. I believe Dufty will tare the opposition apart with his speed, elusive step, and his great passing game. Dufty used to kick well in general play when he played five-eighth in his junior days.

The Dragons need a bigger body fullback who has speed, a good attacking game, and also a good defensive game. Someone similar to Dugan but with a good passing game, and a more durable history.

I'd like to see Ramsey and later Schiller tested in the fullback role in reserve grade, and if good enough, promoted to first-grade on the left-wing prior to be tested in the fullback position.

Not much chance of prising Nofo away from the Tigers. ..as baffling as it may seem to some he's rusted on loyal to the club
