Gift cards - good or bad birthday gifts?

What do you think?
Normally they are my go to present for someone's birthday when I have no idea what else to get, but they also seem to be a bit boring and not as thoughtful compared to an item you know the recipient will enjoy.

Sometimes it's just way too f**kin hard to think of something that someone will like.

If you aren't going to come up with a real gift, then just give the cash instead.

The gift card has literally no benefits over cash. It's effectively cash that can only be used at specific places, as opposed to normal cash that can be used wherever the person you are giving it to pleases.

It doesn't make you look slightly better "oh at least he put the thought in to get a gift card rather than cash", no, pretty much everyone is thinking why didn't he just give me cash.

A gift card for major store or group, all the way. No qualms, and cash is great too.

But Christmas should really just be about presents for the little kids... f**k coming up with present ideas for every tom dick and harry adult who shares your blood type but who you hardly see in day to day life. Just save the time and effort and donate their share of present cash to charities instead.

This...too stressful having to buy presents for family members.

Just give them gift cards..

It depends on where the gift card is from

If your mum is an old boiler, there's no bleedin use giving her a Victoria's Secret voucher

Get her a Bunnings voucher, so she can buy Polly Filla for her make up

Gift cards solve a problem where it is practically impossible to buy certain items without the recipient being present. The element of surprise goes out the door.

It's no good buying your missus a pair of shoes or a bra hoping it will be the right size and style. A 100 times out of a 100, you'll stuff it up.

gift cards have their uses. my brothers gf likes that lush soap shit. i wanted to get her some but had no idea what she'd like, so i got her a card instead so she pick her own feral smelling shit.

also JBhifi at the moment have a thing where you buy a $50 gift voucher you get a coupon for 20% off your next purchase (to the amount of $20), so you buy a gift voucher then next time you go in (cos they've made it so the coupon isnt valid straight away) you can get up to $20 off when you spend $100.

bought 2 cards last week, used both vouchers over the weekend :)

Bunnings vouchers. Never expire, every merkin can find a use for them. If I had a drawer full of them I'd still be pretty happy for someone to give me more.

Tried using on the snag sangas stall outside, but they wouldn't accept them. Apparently, they were for "charity"
