Penrith five-eighth Ryan Girdler will miss most of the National Rugby League season after suffering a major shoulder injury.
Girdler will undergo an operation on Thursday that will sideline him for 16 weeks. The former New South Wales and Australian centre had tests yesterday which revealed the damage, which he suffered during Sunday's loss to Brisbane at Penrith Stadium.
Girdler says he expects to be back in time for round 17. Off-season signing Preston Campbell is likely to replace Girdler at five-eighth, with Penrith coach John Lang naming his side today for this weekend's game against Melbourne.

Aren't you just glad we're not at the old WORL forums in light of this news. The boards would be cluttered with weeping Girdler lovers.
Best of luck to Girdler in his rehab.

I was thinking the same thing myself RD... how many get well cards do you reckon Girds is going to get? More importantly, how many won't be written in crayon?

Actually, I'm not sure if the enormity of the situation has sunk in at the Footy Show forum yet.

Whatever happened to all those Girdler fans from the old board anyway?
I reckon there was maybe 20-30 of them (conservatively put of course) at our peak period there. I don't see anywhere near that many at the FootyShow boards.
Have they all departed the forum chat thing, or have they matured? :p

As reported by the story on the NRL webpage:
“It’s awful news for Ryan and the club. But he’ll be back in time to help us get ready for the finals series.” CEO Shane Richardson said today.
Penrith in the finals series? I'd fly home to see that.

Contradictory terms perhaps?
Sad news for Girlder and the Chocolate Soldiers, but they'll march on. Players like Gower, Priddis, Puletua and Wesser still inject experience and class into the team.
I grew up in the Penrith area and played most of my junior footy there, so I have a soft spot for them.
Best of luck in recovery to Girdler.

I think Girds should seriously contemplate retirement. He is 31 and his best days are long gone. He is very injury prone and if he does return this season, it will be in the centres. Preston Campbell will slot into half and Gower to five eighth which I think is a better combination.
