GLENN Maxwell has posted vision of himself working on a new cricket shot — and it’s clearly his most outrageous yet.
The man who has perfected the reverse sweep, the ramp and the lookaway cut has now brought us what he’s calling the “behind the back shot”.
Currently playing English county cricket with Yorkshire, Maxwell used a coaching session with the club’s youngsters to show off this insane new stroke.
The vision was shared on Pro Coach Yorkshire Cricket’s Facebook page with the message: “Thanks to Glenn Maxwell for opening boys minds to what’s possible! How about this for quick learning!”
It drew criticism from some Facebook users. Comments ranged from “sorry ... you shouldn’t be coaching” to “are you teaching them how to get out for a first ball duck” to “although this is just for fun, what’s the point of hitting a wide ball straight into the hands of mid-wicket” to “Ruin cricket. Go ahead. I’d really would never want a Maxwell type player in my team. Shots like these ruin the mindset of youngsters during their process of learning. I have never wanted to play a shot like this, and hopefully I never will.”
It would take some nerve to actually play his behind the back shot in a game for Australia — but if anyone can do it “The Big Show” can.
Maxwell shocked audiences during Australia’s successful World Cup campaign earlier this year with a number of mind-blowing shots, none more daring than this cut shot against Pakistan.
The 26-year-old Victorian pulled out of a two-week tour of India with Australia A this week to continue playing with Yorkshire. He’s already provided one memorable moment this season, reverse-sweeping the first ball of the innings in a match against Lancashire for six.
