the reds had a great win tonight against top team wentworthville 26-14 with an inspiring display of football. in a very fast paced game the reds went into the second half down by two points, but came out with a well controlled game plan and added enthusiasim to take the win. super sub joel freeman came on and played magnificantly with a great kicking game and well time dummy half runs from .the whole team played out of their skins and if they keep this up they should go well for the rest of this year and next season.there seems to be a different attitude from the players under fill in coach justin nixon and a winning culture dosent seem to far away.other players to shine were godecke with two trys, phipps and safi at fullback had a grat game, well done boys

CONGRATULATIONS WA REDS on getting your first win! Really happy for em.

Most of their games have been very close and haven't been disgraced too often so can't believe they were winless until now.

At long last the lads efforts were rewarded! Great game plan, great kick and chase game, played for the full 80min without clocking off for our normal 10min period and finally we got a crucial call go our way!

Well done to everyone at the Reds, this was long overdue! Geez my head hurts this morning!

Reds Crash Through For First Win

The WA Reds finally showed what they are made of with a never say die effort at Charles Riley Reserve in North Beach beating top of the table Wentworthville Magpies 26 to 16. There were signs early on for the Reds as they seemed to look different and had that edge.
They put a stamp their name on the game around 10 minutes before half time and while still behind were making the Magpies work hard for their tries. They did not let the moment get in front of them.
Both sides played at a good level of football exchanging sets of six and keeping pressure on. It was a good game of defensive football. Finally at the 21 minute mark the Magpies crossed for the first try.
It wasn’t until 9 minute later that the Reds were able to level the score. Savi Hafoka crossed after a scrum feed which saw the Reds catch the Magpies short on the right wing.
The Magpies scored again through Sione Kaafi, but his work was equaled with a try to Steve Gherardi with just one minute before the break.
After an even first half the Reds went into the shed just 8 to 10 down.
The Reds did not let the pressure get the better of them and there was no break in the score until the 55 minute mark when Jason Godecke broke through to take the lead.
The crowd also sensed that something special may happen.
The Reds were 14 – 10 up but with only a two man bench with Nathan Searle and Joel Lillyman off injured, it was a nervous time.
With just 15 minutes left on the clock the Reds let a try through under the posts to go behind by two points. But they continued to believe in the task.
Joel Freeman scored an inspirational try with 9 minutes to go to push the Reds out to a 20 to 16 lead. It was then they knew they could win.
With the Reds working out wide with 3 minutes to go Godecke crossed for his second and with the conversion took the score to 26 to 16.
Coach Justin Nixon was ecstatic and there was a big sense of relief with the team and crowd in the first win of the season and finally a belief in the team that they can win the big games.
“We always stayed in the game and knew if we kept the errors down that we always had a chance. It may be an upset, but we knew we had it in us. They played to the game plan and kept pushing up the right wing where Gareth Morton and Godecke took control. It was a great team win”.
Best players for the Reds were Gareth Morton, Steve Gherardi and Isaac Thomas with Joel Freeman sensational off the bench.

Fantastic that they finally won a game this season!
A bugger for me though because I had a 23rd followed by a 30th to attend last night so I was no chance of sneaking in the Reds game too. Good work Reds!

Just by co-incidence, I'm wearing my WA Reds jersey as I type this, so perhaps I must've known something ..!
