Gidley at 89.29% has to be one of the most underrated goal kickers in the comp. Awesome under pressure and keeps improving on it each year.

Hasn't had nearly as many as shots as most of the top kickers.

Yeah, 25/28. He's still averaged in the 80s in the past few years though and continues to improve each year. His goal kicking is very underrated IMO.

Compare the stats for this year to those from 1986, the first year that site has goalkicking stats for. Today's goalkickers are on average a good 10-15% better than those from 25 years ago.

Overall, in 1986 928 goals were kicked from 1425 attempts, for a success rate of 65.12%. Thus far in 2011, 770 goals have been kicked from 1008 attempts, for a success rate of 76.39%.

When your absolute shanks go over the crossbar (as he did twice in rnd 6 against the Sharks) you know you must be doing something right :lol:

And Combined between Wes and Kurt the knights have only missed 6 or so kicks all year (Stigg was 1/2 last week). So they must be doing something right up there.

Anyone know when the Synthetic ball was introduced, as well as what seasons Kicking tees began to be used widely? That'd make for some interesting reading too.

I remember Schifoske was one of the last to go away from the sand.

I think there are a few factors. One is the kicking tees, another synthetic balls. There's also the fact modern goal kickers devote a lot more time to practice (helps being a full time professional), and the switch the old toe-poke to around the corner to what most modern kickers use, which is a kind of hybrid of the two (pioneered by Halligan, I believe). I know when I was a kid and I used to practice kicking (about the only skill I possessed), I found kicking with my toe but running in on angle gave the best combination of distance and aim.
