Going nowhere: outcast Mortimer ready to see out rest of Eels deal

Looks like his manager was doing the media rounds yesterday.

PARRAMATTA five-eighth Daniel Mortimer has informed the club he plans to see out the remaining two years of his contract after being unable to generate a rival offer from other clubs -- a move which may have an impact on the shape of the Eels' offer to North Queensland centre Willie Tonga. Mortimer, one of the game's most coveted players only last year, was given permission to negotiate with rival clubs but came away empty-handed, prompting his manager Steve Gillis to inform the Eels his client now planned to stay and fight for his place in the team.
It had been speculated that Mortimer's exit would pave the way for Parramatta to make room under its salary cap for Tonga. However, The Australian understands the deal will go through regardless, with the only impact being to the way the club structures its deal with Tonga.
Given the tightness of the salary cap for next season, the Eels may be forced to back-end Tonga's contract meaning they pay him less in the first year and steadily increase the amount in the ensuing years.
Mortimer, out of favour since being dropped earlier this year, faces an almost insurmountable task to force his way back into first grade next season given Chris Sandow has been signed from South Sydney to play halfback alongside five-eighth Jarryd Hayne.
His attempt to find an offer elsewhere was hamstrung to an extent by other factors -- most clubs have already spent their salary cap for next season and Mortimer's existing contract is worth
in excess of $200,000 a season.
"He will be there for two years," Gillis said. "I have notified the club of that. We're not looking anymore." ..8<..

My take on the Morts thing is that they have interest but not at $220k, so they are putting pressure on us to pay some of the deal for the next few years. We of course are saying no - you can play reggies for two years for all we care.

Personally Morts should do what Finchy did and get out whilst he can. After another 2 years in reggies, he'll struggle to get a 2nd tier offer.
yeah that sounds pretty right to me ... and the other interested club is probably playing games too to try and make another club (parra) pay part the bill .... just one never ending game

I thought Morts signed a 2 year deal so that he could renegotiate when the new TV deal was struck in 2012. I can't believe he has another year option in his favour!

Damn, I was hoping Penrith was going to pick him up. I heard Peter Tunks on Talkin Sport mention that he thought that move was on.

I also think it is BS that most clubs have finalised their rosters for next year - just keep an eye on how many signings occur before the end of the season. Obviously nobody wants Morts.

I think Tonga is just distracting the other clubs while we extend Mortimer's contract.

I think he should have taken the Super League gamble tbh, but it is a big risk if he wants to get back into the NRL.

His career will pretty much be over if he spends the next two years playing in reserve grade...i wonder if he realizes that.

Maybe he sees it as already being over and that's why he is making the most out of the money he is on now.

If he goes to England, his career is over too. What do you want the kid to do? Go to Penrith or Dogs and sit in reserve grade anyway for less money?

If he's the only half in our entire club who is contracted next year, WHY AREN'T WE PLAYING HIM IN FIRST GRADE??? Our season is over. Why have $220,000 wasting away in reserve grade? He could be a handy player in next year's roster.

you would think that he will look around again next year if he doesn't get a chance. i wouldn't think money is his motivator if he stands to inherit the vineyards

It is only August - there is no way every club has finished their recruitment. No club wants him - end of story.

Personally, I would love to see him join another club and do okay. Not sure what the hatred on here is all about. It isn't his fault the club paid overs for him - nor is it his fault that he is not as talented as expected.

Right now, i actually think his our best option st 7, I really mean it!

If you want to rotate your hookers, then obviously he's our only option with Robbo out.

Play MK for 80mins and he stays in reggies.

You have to feel sorry for the kid, was part of an unbelievable run in 09 in which he got to play in the Grand Final. In 2010 he had two clubs go toe to toe in getting his name to paper. In 2011 he finds himself playing park footy in front of 70 odd people with no other club wanting his service for 2012.

With Casey continuing to play in the halves you would think that they might be looking at his services again next year.

IMO it wouldn't make sense to continue to play him in the halves and punt him at the end of the year, when Morts is still on the books.

It is not park footy.

I hope he gets his 09 form back because he has alot of potential and it really would b a shame for him to drop off the radar.

Tries hard and never backs down this kid
