Gold Coast Pirates in

Congratulations to the Gold Coast. I hope they perform better than the last time they were in the comp.

I feel sorry for the Central Coast. I reckon their bid had a lot going for it.

i like the idea of the 16th team but i hate to think of all the players that will be bought from our club (premier leauge)

I don't think we'll lose many to the GC actually. The clubs that may suffer are those with feeder club agreements with Qld Cup teams. There's every chance some of those Qld Cup sides will become feeders to the GC team.

There's also all those players vying for spots at the Broncos and the Cowboys who will likely get looked at as well.

Makes the Newtown agreement look smart once again.

Has anyone heard what exemptions, if any, the GC team is getting?

P.S. Here's the link to the Gold Coasts website. There's some stuff there about voting for the new mascot.

The gold coast team, have same rules in regarding signing players as other 15 teams, they will not be allowed to sign or discuss with players, till june 30 2006, so they will have no players till then, but it wont take a mind reader to know who is going there, or players using it for bargaining power, there is 2 confirmed for GC Preston Campbell & Luke Priddis.

Could be intersting times at the rorters with Cartwright assisnat coach, he might try to pinch some of theere lower grade players, and people upset with how Ricky coaches

Here is a list of players who are juniors or from around the GC/tweed area, possible targets for the Pirates, which will be there knickname

Bulldogs Martin Mitchell

Broncos Tom Laeroyd-Lahrs

Cronulla Dimitri Pelo

Melbourne Scott Anderson, Jamie McDonald, Jeremy Smith

Cowboys Clint Amos, Brent McConnell,

Parramatta Tim Smith

Penrith Michael Gordon

Roosters Ben Hannant, Sam Perrett

Tigers Daniel Fitzhenry, Benji Marshall

Most of players listed are lower graders, or Flegg players but there is s ome base with just these players.

Other things to note that in QLD Cup both Burleigh who are leaders of comp and Tweed heads are from the GC area.

Also play in junior similiar to flegg in qld cup are Tugun & Runaway Bay

Keebra Park High school will become a assest for the Pirates as this team is regular in the finals of the best schoolboy tournaments.

And the final factor which will help, is Broncos and Cowboys going well, QLD players who dont want to leave qld have further option now with GC, and weaking both these clubs

That's not what I meant. Do they get any salary cap exemptions? Very hard to start a team from scratch with $3.25m.

They said they wanted 6 "marquee" players. What's a marquee player worth? $250 - $300k a season maybe?

Havent heard of any exemption, what i believe should happen to help at least there depth, is next year when clubs give list of top 25 players for first grade squad, Pirates should be allowed to sign any not in that list for 07, at least this will give them some depth, otherwise, worst case scenario they come in with couple marquee players and not much else, and get lapped every 2nd week

i'd be surprised if they were allowed a higher cap than any other team. at the end of the day that's all any team is allowed to spend and the other ceo's would scream blue murder if the new boys had more $$$ to further raid their playing ranks.

fair enough i think. they've been accepted ahead of the other bids based on the basis that they are the strongest, strong enough to hit the ground running without any unfair advantage

If Nathan Merritt leaves the the Sharks at the end of next year I hope the Pirates pick him up as he will be an outstanding fullback by then and at least will be given a bit of a go by Cartright.

Won't get Pelo, he's apparently off to join Beats and Bickers at UTC for their entry into the Super League.
