Gold Coast salary cap

I'll be very intrigued at to how the Gold Coast stay under the salary cap in their first year.
With the likes of Bailey and Campbell and the rumoured Brian Carney signing.
They wont be allowed an exemption, Souths weren't when they come back so it would be injustice if were given one.
PLus if they went over the first couple of years they would have to work on getting it back down which would only go backwards.

I hope they play it right and buy some top class players but a lot of youth to build a side. Souths messed it up and are only just starting to show levelled heads and get things back on track.

They will have a few high profile players, but the majority of their squad will be average first graders, not on a great deal of money

The gold coast have signed 2 quality players...its not like they will field an origin team by 2007.
Not all their players will be on 300k. They will operate like all other succesful clubs.

Don't get me wrong, not bagging them. Just don't want them stuff it up like a lot of clubs before them.

So far they have got Bailey and Campbell.
STrong rumours of Brian Carney who is regarded as the best winger in the game. Ashley Harrison is also considering a one year deal with Souths and maybe moving there.

I'm sure the quality shopping list wont stop there.

Just saying they will have to be careful that's all.

They may get 4-5-6 players on 200-300k, but they will also have alot of 40-100k players looking for a fresh start which will balance things.
Coast wont make the same mistakes like they have in the past, or otherclubs before them.
IF they do, the knives will be out bigtime!

Campbell and Bailey is a solid start.

They need a mixture of youth and experience. What is the situation with Juniors? Will they have a feeder club?

The need to make sure the players then spend the big money on are the important players on the field. There is no point paying 300K for an origin prop and having a 50K no name half back. They should fill the numbers 9, 7, and 1 before they waste money elsewhere.

Will they have a feeder club?

They're in talks with 3 QLD Cup teams, and hope to be alligned with all 3, to draw from the bases from all clubs.

The front row (8,9,10) are the 3 most important positions on the field.

You can have the best halfback in the game, but if you have 2 5th rate props you won't win a game.

You can have a 5th rate halfback, but if you have 2 of the best props in the game, you can win matches.

All positions are important. It comes across as props arn't important because you usually have 3-4 on a team.

Burleigh Bears should surely be there main feeder side.

Gold Coast are off to a smart start.

By signing key elite players they are able to prove they are serious about fielding a quality side. This makes buying average players easier and you dont have to pay overs for them, which Souths have been doing for a while.

The Coast looks like it has a fair few players keen to head there, Lifestyle living costs and family are all ready draw cards. I think the coast will be more competitive then most people are thinking in their first year.

As a Souths supporter, whilst I'd admit our initial recruitment was poor (lead by none other than Phil Gould I might add), and we've been a shambles since... I really think Shane Richardson and Shaun McRae are the men to turn it around. Anyway that's not my point.

My point is the Gold Coast have about 20 months to recruit players for their first year... Souths had to start in october, about 5 months... It was always going to be easier for the GC (not to mention it's a nice place to live!).

Cheers

Chances are they will sign Jamaal Lolesi and Willie Tonga as the centre pairing and the addition of another quality prop would see them off to a similar start to the Storm in 1998.

However, too much success too soon can have an adverse affect on crowds because they expect it all the time so IMO, a solid build up over five years is the best way to ensure success and longevity in the NRL.

Isn't Tonga signed up to a fairly long contract at the dogs

Talk is that Carney will be a knight in 2006. May stay longer if he likes the place meaning Gold Coast miss out.

Prince is there number 1 target for halfback apparently. I'll be filthy if we lose him. Hopefully GC will plunder the teams that have stockpiles of talent - not teams like the Tigers and Souths.
