GOLD Coast U/20s player Kurt Foggo has been banned by the NRL for two years after testing postitive to the stimulant methylhexaneamine.

The stimulant was detected in an ‘in-competition’ ASADA test on September 10. The player has served a provisional suspension since October 11 this year.

Foggo will be able to resume playing on October 11, 2012.

The player was one of nine athletes caught in a WASADA crackdown on use of the stimulant, which is used in body building and dietary supplements and increasingly used as a component of some party drugs.
The other athletes have yet to be named but it is believed they could include NRL and AFL players and Australian Commonwealth Games athletes.

Those test results, which were revealed exclusively by the Daily Telegraph, prompted ASADA to issue an urgent warning to all Australian athletes about inadvertent use of the substance, which is also known as DMAA, dimethylamylamine and dimethylpentylamine.

The drug is the same substance that cost Nigerian runner Osayomi Oludamola her Commonwealth Games gold medal - originally awarded under a cloud of controversy after Australian sprinter Sally Pearson was disqualified for jumping the gun in the 100m final.

NRL CEO David Gallop today warned all players to take extreme care when taking sports supplements or any substance designed to assist in training.

“Every NRL Club has an Anti-Doping Officer and a Doctor and it is vital that players properly consult to ensure that they know exactly what they may be taking,” Mr Gallop said.

“The cost of making a mistake in this area is a high one for any athlete but the need to retain strong drug policies and strong testing regimes is also fundamental to every sport.”

Gold Coast Titans under-20s player Kurt Foggo has drugs ban cut by Court of Arbitration for Sport

Gold Coast Titans under-20 rugby league player Kurt Foggo has had his appeal for a drugs ban partially upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Foggo was originally handed a two-year suspension for testing positive to the stimulant dimethylpentylamine (methylhexaneamine), but was successful in having that reduced to just six months.

The Titans youngster is now free to play, having been provisionally suspended since October 11, 2010 and having the offence confirmed at an NRL anti-doping tribunal hearing on November 4.

An appeal filed on February 15 by Foggo against the decision made by the NRL tribunal was declared admissible by the arbitrary court.

The period of ineligibility was ruled to be six months from October 11 last year, meaning Foggo can now make his return to the field.

Foggo returned a positive result after using a pre-workout supplement Jack3d, which he said at the time he bought from a supplements retailer on the Gold Coast.

The Tweed Heads junior said in February he wasn't a drug cheat and was fighting for a downgrade on the grounds he had attempted to check whether he could legally use the substance - including a search of the ASADA website.
