GOLD Coast U/20s player Kurt Foggo has been banned by the NRL for two years after testing postitive to the stimulant methylhexaneamine.
The stimulant was detected in an in-competition ASADA test on September 10. The player has served a provisional suspension since October 11 this year.
Foggo will be able to resume playing on October 11, 2012.
The player was one of nine athletes caught in a WASADA crackdown on use of the stimulant, which is used in body building and dietary supplements and increasingly used as a component of some party drugs.
The other athletes have yet to be named but it is believed they could include NRL and AFL players and Australian Commonwealth Games athletes.
Those test results, which were revealed exclusively by the Daily Telegraph, prompted ASADA to issue an urgent warning to all Australian athletes about inadvertent use of the substance, which is also known as DMAA, dimethylamylamine and dimethylpentylamine.
The drug is the same substance that cost Nigerian runner Osayomi Oludamola her Commonwealth Games gold medal - originally awarded under a cloud of controversy after Australian sprinter Sally Pearson was disqualified for jumping the gun in the 100m final.
NRL CEO David Gallop today warned all players to take extreme care when taking sports supplements or any substance designed to assist in training.
Every NRL Club has an Anti-Doping Officer and a Doctor and it is vital that players properly consult to ensure that they know exactly what they may be taking, Mr Gallop said.
The cost of making a mistake in this area is a high one for any athlete but the need to retain strong drug policies and strong testing regimes is also fundamental to every sport.
