NSW Cup looms for Goulburn

The Canberra Raiders and Goulburn Workers have moved a step closer to entering a Goulburn team in the NSW Cup next season.

Raiders’ bosses Don Furner and John McIntyre met with officials from the Workers Club, NSWRL and Country Rugby League in Goulburn late yesterday to discuss the viability of entering a team in the NSW Cup over age competition.

Should the move go ahead the Raiders would place their excess NRL players with Goulburn instead of Queensland Cup side Souths Logan.

This would likely spell the end of cash strapped Souths Logan club’s involvement in the Queensland Cup once their current deal with the Raiders expires at season’s end.

Yesterday’s meeting is the first indication the Raiders are wavering on their stance to continue to send players to the Queensland Cup next year.

Furner had previously stated his intention to remain in partnership with Souths Logan, despite NSWRL boss Geoff Carr being adamant the club must return to NSW or face heavy sanctions.

Carr threatened to ban Canberra players who compete in the Queensland Cup next year from returning to the NRL for the rest of the season and could also block Raiders teams from junior NSW competition.

It is unknown whether the Workers Club would be able to afford to continue backing a team in the Canberra Raiders Cup should it decide to fund a NSW Cup side.

But the Canberra Times understands it will cost Goulburn at least $500,000 to enter a team in the NSW Cup next season.

Goulburn has been a key recruiting area for the Raiders since their inception in the NSWRL in 1982.

Both Todd Carney and Jarrod Croker were recruited from Goulburn, while the Picker brothers – Joe, Mick and Ben – played there before being picked up by the Raiders.

The Canberra Times

Finally removes us from the Queensland attachment.

We have a good thing with our relationship with the Magpies. I dont understand how someone like Carr is allowed to run an organisation like he does.
Why should the Raiders fund the setup of a new team. Why are we inconvienced?
We will lose our ties with QLD and a very big junior recruitment area.

Rubbish we have it hard enough with recruitment and retention without the prospect of being sent away to play in some two headed two bit competition when coming back from injury or in the transitional phase.

Good vision IMO.

Good vision IMO.

QLDcup is far superior to the NSW comp.

Forming a relationship with Goulburn is a better solution than joining a Sydney team ,which looked likely early in the piece but I still view playing with SL a better option.

Wow... What BS... This will hopefully all just go away once the NRL changes to the new structure... As in no more news ltd... no more NSW Cup or QLD Cup managers from the 1700's...

I really hope this gathers momentum,it is a rediculous scenario that players are sent interstate.

Qld Cup and NSW Cup are roughly of the same standard. It's nonsense to suggest otherwise.

I like it because it stops us from having our two sides a bajillion miles apart.

The NSW cup and the QLD cup are of similar quality? Have you actually watched NSW Cup vs QLD Cup games? Or better yet, if QLD is so bad, why are we about to close out a 5th straight season win? We (Raiders this time now QLD) would be shooting ourselves in the foot to kill our only real link left with QLD... It's Mal's original club too so I can't see him taking it too well either...

f**king oath they are similar, and match fitness would be better found a jump in the car away rather than at some foreign interstate graveyard.

And f**k what Mal thinks.

QLD Cup standard is much higher than NSW cup..QLD Cup 2nd best comp after NRL..tune in to ABC on Saturdays to see for yourself..Ive seen both and NSW Cup is laughable in comparison

Because Mal has soooo much to do with the club these days?

I watch a heap of NSW Cup games. The standard is almost identical.

Id back the top QLD team ( Souths Logan ) to beat the top NSW team.
'
Both comps are well off the pace compared to the NRL.

Ideally there needs to be a proper reserve comp ,drop the TC to U19's and 20's and over play in the reserve grade.

Reserve grade = sh*t... That's why we got rid of it... I like the under 20's a lot more than the reserve grade comp we had before... Think about it... It's the players who are ether injured, at the end of their time in first grade, in bad form, dropped for off-field reasons, are there just as a backup player for the actually good ones, or aren't up to first grade standard...

The under 20's are at least the best in their age bracket and a lot ARE up to first grade standard, just don't have the size or the maturity for it yet... It's a MUCH better comp to watch than reserve grade ever could be...

Plus with the current system the QRL and NSWRL get players they wouldn't usually dream of seeing before retirement...
