The Rub Down - Dragons vs. Bulldogs
September 4, 2017 - 7:50 PM
Match Recap: The Dragons were playing for their season while the Bulldogs wanted to send their departing players out with a win tonight. The thought of another week of football didn't seem to interest the Dragons, though, as they played one of their poorer matches of the year in a 26-20 defeat.
Bulldogs cult hero, Josh Reynolds, had a dream start to the game going over after five minutes. He found himself at the end of a Brenko Lee grubber to give the Dogs an early 6-0 lead. Reynolds would only last another ten minutes before leaving the field with a lower leg injury.
After nervously navigating the first 13 minutes, Tariq Sims made the most of a sloppy Will Hopoate bomb defusal to collect the football and send Joel Thompson under the posts to level up the scores.
It looked like the Dragons needed a compass at times. When they did have the ball, they were directionless and no chance of scoring. The worst scoring team in the competition, on the other hand, were throwing the ball around and playing enterprising football.
Hopoate ended a brilliant dart down the left by Chase Stanley to give the Bulldogs a 10-6 lead before he was involved only minutes later on the other side of the field, putting Lee over a go ahead 14-6.
The Dragons did manage a try shortly before half time, but based on the 40 minutes, it's surprising they had enough sense of direction to find the sheds at half time.
After attacking the line but failing to get a kick away time-and-time again in the first ten minutes after half time, the Bulldogs let the Dragons march up the field and take an 18-14 lead.
After Gareth Widdop slotted a penalty goal it looked as though the wheels had fallen off the Bulldogs and without something special, they weren't a chance at coming back.
Just as well Hopoate decided to play on Sundays.
He made the run and threw a miraculous pass to Aiden Tolman to bring the scores level with 15 minutes to play. With their tails up, the Dogs then found the line again giving the Dragons six minutes to score six points and save their season.
The Red V threw everything at the Dogs but couldn't crack the line they were forced to make plans for a quick dash to the $2 shop for tomorrow's Mad Monday costumes as the final siren sounded.
Stat of the Night: 26 points (Bulldogs)
More often than not, 20 points against the Bulldogs would be more than enough to secure a win, but not today.
Averaging a league-worst 14.5 points per game, the Bulldogs were made to look like they possessed a formidable attack as they were allowed to offload the ball and find plenty of space out wide.
The Dragons were poor behind the ruck in particular. Michael Lichaa found 71 metres from his seven runs out of dummy half, scoring the match-winner in the process.
Man of the Match: Will Hopoate
The Bulldogs wouldn't have been in this one without Hopoate tonight. In the moments it looked like Canterbury would drop their head and allow the Dragons to run away, Hopoate provided the spark.
He played a role in three tries while also pulling off an incredible try-saver to be the best on their park today.
Tomorrow's Headline: *Bulldogs end two seasons in one day*
