... and good riddance.
Saw his first First Grade game back at Lidcombe, didn't think much of him, and have never had much cause to change my opinion. The improvement in referee's fitness he inspired was welcome (not that top referees were ever unfit), but the self-importance, media profile, and general spotlight seeking are things the game could have easily done without.
Hopefully now referees can retreat into the background a little and just get on with their job and leave the spotlight to the games real stars.
As for being the best ref the game has ever produced - pure hyperbole. He could have a good game no doubt (and nice for him that his last game will be remembered far more than the two that preceeded it), but he was an inconsistent clown mostly (usually brought about by his own hubris). Little better than another referee nicknamed Hollywood from a previous era.
