Gus didn't sack Luke Lewis. Gus removed captaincy from him during the Origin period.
Gus then recognised there were too many players on high salaries and approached Lewy about which player should be released.
Being a stand up person, Lewy didn't want to see any young players leave and he asked for a release to free cap pressure.

Thats Luke's words. Straight from his book. He and Gus both broke down in tears when he asked for the release.
