If we can bear another 'best of' side, how about selecting one of the best performed players in each position from 98 - 06?

Here's mine:

1) Luke Phillips (00)
2) Hasem El Masri (04)
3) Matt King (06)
4) Paul Whatuira (05)
5) Luke Rooney (03)
6) Brad Fittler (02)
7) Stacey Jones (02)
8) Petero Civoniceva (06)
9) Luke Priddis (03)
10) Willie Mason (04)
11) Ben Kennedy (01)
12) Adrian Morley (02)
13) Tewera Nikau (99)

BENCH
14) Brett Hodgeson (01)
15) Benji Marshall (05)
16) Richard Villisanti (02)
17) Dean Halatau (05)

PJ Marsh off the bench in 2001. No disrespect to Hodgson, he played well too on the night, but Marsh I thought was brilliant got us back in the game late in the 2nd half.

Take Halatau out from the bench and put Scott Sattler there instead.

The criteria is:

"the best performed players in each position from 98 - 06"

How one tackle fits there I dont know.

The title of the thread is "Grand Final Heroes Side of the NRL". Sattler was proclaimed a 'hero' after that overhyped tackle against the world's slowest winger, and therefore should probably make the side, even if he was p*ss average as a player, and 10 times worse as a commentator.

Sattler really doesn't deserve to be remembered as 'Grand Final Hero', but unfortunately the nuffbag will.

Matt Utai might even deserve a spot before El Masri to be honest. Utai scored 2 tries in the 04 GF and made a few big breaks. One of his better games actually.

a nuffbag? the guy played his heart out everytime he put on the penrith jersey. sure he wasnt the most stylish or skillfull of players but he got done what a lock forward is meant to do. the guy played at the highest level of club rugby league and did it successfully ,your descriptions of him are way over the top and just not warranted.

sure byrne is not the fastest winger , but a moment like that lifts a team. The tackle itself was only a small part of the panthers winning, but never underestimate what a moment like that can do for a team.

surely Jamie Ainscough and Anthony Mundine deserve a game

Whats Ainscough got to do with it, A Penalty try can only be given if the try was DEFINATELY going to be scored, therefore, if he didn't KO Smith it still would of been a try

Johns of 2001 has to be there

Locky please...look who created the thread.
And i will be fair on this one occasion to the blowfly, Phillips was pretty good in a losing effort in the 2000 GF

Well Pat Richards, Martin Lang and Matt Geyer all have premiership rings too

Sattler was at least inspirational.
