Who cares? Everyone knows that rugby league only really started in 1972.How would’ve people copped in the 50’s through to 1971 when St George and Souths won every premiership except for 1969

Seeing as you brought up fairness, thought I'd just add in that today the AFL granted the Gold Coast Suns a massive "emergency relief package" that gifts them 4 consecutive #1 draft picks in addition to the picks they already get and the entire city of Darwin as a junior catchment area, while stopping all rival clubs from bidding on any player in their junior academy system, which basically means they get 15 junior clubs in the NT and 11 in the Gold Coast that no other team is allowed to even offer a developmental contract to over the next 3 years to any player in those systems.
Talk "fairness" all you want, rugby league can at least fall back on the integrity of not allowing a team that has failed miserably, priority selection to the point of effectively restricting the right of a player to seek employment just to prop up a single club.
I am guessing with draft and salary cap you get a max 5 year period to do well - then you gradually fall off as you get stuck with the dud juniors coming through. While with a salary cap only you can extend your dynasty a bit longer as you have more say in junior development but each team gets a chance pretty regularly as players still move around clubsAnd yet in the last 20 years there's been 12 different premiers in the NRL yet only 11 in AFL.
Not to mention no back to back winners in the NRL, AFL had two teams, Hawthorn and Brisbane win three in a row each.
So ya know....

I wouldn't have coped very well, probably died from alcohol poisoning after 10 straight. How would’ve people copped in the 50’s through to 1971 when St George and Souths won every premiership except for 1969

Throw in the Knights too, who aren't a Sydney club obviously but have significant support.Aside from "Fair" or not.. the finals series' over the last few seasons has had a distinct lack of matches between the big Sydney clubs.. By these I mean Parramatta, Canterbury, Souths, Tigers and Dragons.
Yes its the NRL not NSWRL... but nothing compares to the hype, atmosphere and interest level in the harbour city when these teams play each other in the finals. (Especially the GF. And we've only had one amongst these teams in god knows how long.. ).
And they fill stadiums. Eg Dogs v Eels Prelim @ Homebush.
I've got nothing but respect for the Storm & Roosters' sustained success over the last 21 years.. those clubs have been run brilliantly. And it's up to others to lift their standards if they are to come close to sustaining success like these teams have. But when they make the finals/GF - there's no real "story" about it that captures interest in Sydney except for Roosters fans.. maybe Cronk last year would be an exception..Broncos Cowboys was about the Cowboys first title. Great game it was too,
Others in recent times..
Storm vs Cowboys.... ??? Nothing really..
Sharks v Storm was all about the Sharks winning their first GF. Which they did
Souths v Dogs - huge interest, particularly in Souths for obvious reasons.
Just my opinion but for this years GF - it's all about the Raiders making their first GF since 94 - the non-Sydney team. Yes the Roosters could be the first back to back title holders since the early 90's but even considering this, it's not the big story..
Nailed it.Seeing as you brought up fairness, thought I'd just add in that today the AFL granted the Gold Coast Suns a massive "emergency relief package" that gifts them 4 consecutive #1 draft picks in addition to the picks they already get and the entire city of Darwin as a junior catchment area, while stopping all rival clubs from bidding on any player in their junior academy system, which basically means they get 15 junior clubs in the NT and 11 in the Gold Coast that no other team is allowed to even offer a developmental contract to over the next 3 years to any player in those systems.

P.S Thanks Gregstar for supplying the info.
It was a period of stagnation for the sport, not unlike what we're seeing right now.How would’ve people copped in the 50’s through to 1971 when St George and Souths won every premiership except for 1969
And who cares about the AFL
You mean like Richmond?Nailed out.
Expansion has turned the AFL into a joke.
The absolutely massive concessions handed out to the GWS and Gold Coast - and now the Gold Coast again - has seen a number of Melbourne based clubs struggle miserably for a decade because they haven't been able to pick themselves up in the draft due to the new soulless franchises having a monopoly on the top picks.
The talent in the AFL is now spread so thin - due to the required player numbers and it still being a provincial game of a few states - that you consistently have about 8 awful sides every year.
And what's worse is that the AFL manipulate the draw to ensure the lesser sides play the other shit sides twice. This results in lots of shitty matches and average teams like the Lions having fluke seasons solely due to a soft draw. And now they made the top 4 (and failed miserably) they'll get a tougher draw and drop back accordingly.
The AFL is the most contrived and heavily manipulated team sport in Australia by a mile.
It's more scripted than the WWE.
So in summary: beware of the knock on effects of expansion and also lol@AFL.
CarltonYou mean like Richmond?
Carlton
Essendon
North Melbourne
Melbourne
St Kilda
Western Bulldogs
6 Melbourne heartland AFL clubs with two GF appearances and one fluke Premiership combined from the past 20 seasons.
And worse yet, none of them look even close to changing that stat over the next half decade either.
